ASSOCIATION OF GRACE BAPTIST CHURCHES (EAST ANGLIA)
Articles of Faith as approved at the A.B.M. April 28th 2007
1 God
There is one God, who exists eternally as three distinct but co-equal persons: the Father,
the Son, and the Holy Spirit, each having the whole divine essence, yet the essence is
undivided. God is unchangeable in His holiness, justice, wisdom and love. He is the
almighty Creator, Saviour and Judge who sustains and governs all things according to
His sovereign will for His own glory.
Gen 1:1; Deut.6:4; Deut. 32:4; Jer. 10:10; Mal 3:6; Mt. 3:16-17; Mt. 28:19; Acts 17:24; 1
Cor. 8:4; 2 Cor 13:14; Tit. 3:4-5; Rev 4:11; Rev 15:4.
2 The Bible
God in His great goodness has revealed all that is necessary to life and salvation in
the Bible, which consists of the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments alone. Every
word was inspired by God through human authors, so that the Bible as originally given
is, in its entirety, the Word of God, without error and fully reliable in fact and doctrine. The
Bible alone speaks with final authority and is always sufficient for all matters of belief and
practice. The infallible rule of interpretation of the Bible is the Bible itself.
3 Original sin
God made our first father Adam perfect, holy and upright. Adam sinned and as
the representative and head of the human race brought upon himself and all his
offspring death, condemnation and a sinful nature. As a result it is utterly beyond the
power of fallen mankind to have a saving knowledge of God, to love God, to keep his
laws, to believe the Gospel, to repent of sin or trust in Christ.
Gen 1:27 &31; Gen.2:15-17; Gen 3:6; Ps 51:5; Jn.8:34-35; Rom.3:10-20; 1 Cor. 15:22.
4 Election
God, before the foundation of the world, and for His own glory elected to eternal life
a number of persons which no one can count as an act of free and sovereign grace. This
election was in no way dependent upon His foresight of human faith, decision, works or
merit.
5 Jesus Christ
God sent forth His Son, who is God from all eternity, who became man, Jesus Christ our
Lord, fully God and fully man, having two natures, but one person. He was conceived by
the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, yet without sin, and lived a sinless life in obedience to
the Father. He taught with authority and all His words are true. On the cross He died in
the place of sinners, bearing God’s punishment for their sin, and redeeming them by his
2
blood. He rose from the dead and in His resurrection body ascended into heaven where
He is exalted as Lord of all. He intercedes for His people in the presence of the Father.
Mt.7:28-29; Lk.1:35; Jn.1:1-4 & 14; Acts 1:9-11; Rom. 9.5; 1 Cor.15:3-8; 2 Cor. 5:21;
Phil.2:9-11; Heb.7:25-26; 1 Pet.1:18-19.
6 Particular redemption
The Lord Jesus Christ died at Calvary to effect atonement, propitiation, reconciliation and
redemption for His elect people.
7 Justification
God bore testimony to His acceptance of His Son’s work by raising Him from the dead.
Therefore all who are called by grace are justified in the sight of God on account of the
imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ, which is received by faith alone.
9 Holy living
In obedience to God’s Word and will, and out of love for our Lord Jesus Christ a Christian
is called to live a holy life. It is only such a holy life that gives evidence of true faith and
regeneration.

Heb.13:7 & 17; Rev 2-3.

11 Baptism and the Lord’s Supper
Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are ordinances given by the Lord Jesus Christ as
visible signs of the Gospel and of union with Christ and His Church. In baptism (i.e.
immersion), the believer declares their repentance and faith and this is necessary in
order to enter membership of the local church and partake of the Lord’s Supper, which
is administered under the discipline of that local church.

11:23-26.
12 Mission
The responsibility and privilege of the local church is to be obedient to Christ’s Commis-
sion to go into all the world and preach the gospel to all mankind, to make disciples,
baptising and teaching them.
Mt 28:19-20; Mk.16:15; Acts 1:8; Acts 13:1-4; Rom.1:14-16; 1 Thess.1:8; 1 Thess 2:4.
13 Final perseverance
Those who are regenerated, called and justified shall, by the grace and power of God
persevere in holiness and enter into the joys of heaven.
14 Second Coming
The Lord Jesus Christ will return personally, bodily and visibly as He promised.
15 Final judgement
When the Lord Jesus Christ returns in glory he will raise the dead and judge
the world in righteousness. The wicked will be sent to eternal punishment and
the righteous will be welcomed into a life of eternal joy in fellowship with God.
God will make all things new and will be glorified forever.
Mt.25:31-32 & 46; Acts 17:31; 1 Thess.4:16-17; 2 Thess 1:6-10; 2 Pet. 3:10; Rev 14:11.

PROFILE: Pastor Colin Grimwood
Hi, I’m Colin, pastor of Grundisburgh Baptist Church, and
truly Suffolk born and bred. I grew up in Owls Green,
Dennington, just 5 miles from the even more remote Pixey
Green, where Gill, my wife, was brought up.
I went to chapel at Fressingfield as a boy, but I couldn’t
wait to be old enough to make my own decision not to go
any more. That day never came as the Lord saved me
when I was 14. I couldn’t stay away after that! They were
remarkable days as the church grew from 9 members to
over 60 in a just a few years.
I felt called to the ministry while I was still at school, and
church secretaries kindly invited me to preach in their
churches. My pastor, David Steere, and my parents en-
couraged me to get a “proper job” and qualifications before seeking full-time ministry. So
I trained as an accountant, getting experience in a number of different jobs. I am grateful
to the Suffolk Preachers’ Seminary, which gave me a good theological grounding. This
led me to train as a student pastor for 3 years at Stowmarket under Nigel Lacey.
I was called to the pastorate at Grundisburgh in 1993, and there the Lord has kept me
ever since. Recently we have joined forces with Charsfield, where I now have pastoral
oversight.
Gill and I have three children: James, who is now completing his Masters degree at
Warwick university, and Emily and Joe who are due to start university this autumn.
Beach Mission
I have had the joy of being one of the leaders at Hunstanton beach mission for most of
the past 12 years (in fact it has been quite a family affair!). This has provided a great
opportunity both evangelism and for the training of young people.
It is far more than a children’s mission. It includes that, but our work extends to reaching
parents and other adults, and also to the elderly in residential homes. Who knows how
many have heard the gospel through this work over the years!
The young people (and not so young sometimes – there is no upper age limit) are thrown
in at the deep end and do things they would never have dreamt of doing before. They
gain confidence to speak on the microphone where half the town can hear them, to stand
up in front of children and watching adults to lead quizzes, memory verses, prayers and
games and to give their testimonies in public. One of the most popular tasks is giving out
tracts when they try to get people into spiritual conversation. They also teach children
from the Bible and a few have given messages at open-air meetings. I have seen some
young people come year after year and grow in their spiritual lives.
It has given many of them a real heart for the gospel and we hope that it has enabled
them to serve more effectively in their local churches. As well as this, it has proved a time
of good Christian fellowship as the team pray, work and play together.
Pastors’ Forum
I am also the Secretary of the Pastors’ and Elders’ Forum which meets every couple of
months to discuss the spiritual issues affecting the Association. Stuart wrote in detail
about this work in last year’s Handbook. If there are matters which you feel need to be
addressed, please get in touch with me.

ASSOCIATION LETTER TO THE CHURCHES 2013
What are the marks of a genuine Christian?
Written by Pastor James Paton – ‘Zoar’, Ipswich
Occasionally I end up with Scottish five or ten pound notes when my family visit me on holiday.
Then I have the difficulty in sometimes getting rid of them. I know they re genuine, but some local
shopkeepers don t want to take the chance. They claim that they re not familiar enough with the
currency to know for sure. And it s not always easy to decide, is it? Some forgeries can be so close
to the original that only an expert can tell the difference. Which leads me to the question, How can
we know whether a person is a genuine Christian or not? Is there a sure-proof way?
Is it by a particular brand of clothing or the way they style their hair, or the religious symbols they wear? If
it=s none of the above, what is it? This is the subject I want us to think about briefly. And it=s a searching
one because it should cause you and I who call ourselves Christians to ask, >Do I exhibit the marks of a
genuine Christian?= >Am I the real thing?=
There are certain parts of the professing Christian church which are distinguishable by their outward
appearance. If you went to America you could easily recognise someone from the Amish community by
their clothing. Amish dress is simple and functional. The members are not allowed to express their
individuality through their clothing. Women and girls wear dresses that are calf-length or longer, with long
sleeves. Aprons are worn at home and to church. Starting around adolescence, girls wear simple capes over
their dresses. Men and boys wear long trousers, shirts, and suspenders.
The Christian faith should influence the whole of our lives including how we dress and present ourselves but
this never can be a clear enough way to recognise a Christian given that the Church spans many different
nations and cultures. There needs to be a criteria that is universal as well as timeless. Outward
appearances can never be enough anyway because Jesus described false teachers as wolves in sheep=s
clothing [Matt 7:15]. If dressing up smartly on a Sunday and going to church is the mark of a Christian,
Mormons and Jehovah=s Witnesses would be included.
Wouldn’t it be much simpler if, as in certain religious paintings in the past, there was a halo over all God=s
saints on earth, but no such thing exists. Which brings us back to the question >what are the marks of a
genuine Christian?=
In order to answer this we need to be clear on a more fundamental question, >What is a Christian?=
According to the New Testament, a Christian is someone who has recognised the truth about themselves
before God, that they are a sinner. But they also have had revealed to them the good news about Jesus
Christ and have put their trust in him as their Saviour and Lord. And included in that trust is a committal of
themselves to him B to love and serve him, to live according to what pleases him. If this is what it means for
someone to be a Christian then one should expect to see certain things in all those who are genuine
Christians. I suggest that three things will be found in each true Christian and only in the true Christian.
Firstly, genuine Christians will possess B
1. A true knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ
You should expect to find evidence of a change in the person=s beliefs about Jesus Christ. This must be so
because a Christian is someone whose mind has been illuminated by the Holy Spirit so that >the light of the
gospel of the glory of Christ= has shone in their dark hearts [2 Cor. 4:3-6]. Paul tells us that this revelation
8
of the glory of Christ remains hidden from the minds of unbelievers because Satan has blinded them. So
possessing a true knowledge of Jesus Christ is a clear sign that a person is a Christian.
The Holy Spirit is called >the Spirit of truth= [John 14:17] and he is given to all believers to guide them into
all truth [John 16:12-15]. So we can be confident that when he is at work in a person=s life they will be guided
by him to believe the truth about Jesus Christ.
Scripture teaches that it is impossible for a person to be indwelt and led by the Spirit of God and believe
lies about Jesus Christ. This is what John teaches in chapter 2 of his first letter. In this section of his letter
he is addressing the problem of false teaching. Tragically some from among the fellowship of God=s people
had been taken in by error and had departed from the apostolic testimony about Jesus Christ. Some were
saying that he never had become a real man. John encourages the faithful with these words, >But you have
been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. I write to you, not because you do not know
the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth=. And further down in verse 26, >I
write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. But the anointing that you received
from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches
you about everything B and is true and is no lie, just as it has taught you B abide in him=.
The new believer may be an infant in his understanding of the Bible, but he will have been guided by the
Holy Spirit to believe the truth about Jesus Christ, that he is the Son of God who became a real man, that
he died on the cross for our sins, that he rose again, that he is coming again. So if someone comes to you
and claims to be a Christian but does not believe these things then you know that they cannot be genuine.
Of course each Christian needs to grow in his knowledge and understanding of Jesus Christ, and none of
this happens over night. But the foundation of all this is that each child of God has been taught by the Holy
Spirit to believe the truth about Jesus Christ. But this knowledge isn=t merely something intellectual so
that Jesus is just an idea to them. No, this knowledge is of a living person whom they love, worship and
serve. This leads us to the second distinguishing mark of a genuine Christian, which is B
2. Devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ
This was true of the first disciples of Jesus B they loved him. Remember the questions the resurrected
Christ put to Peter who had denied knowing him. >Do you truly love me?= [John 21:16]. And he replied, >You
know that I love you= [17]. Jesus assumed that his followers would love him and told them in what way this
is to be expressed, saying to them on one occasion, >if you love me, you will keep my commandments=
[John 14:15]. And love for Jesus Christ was to characterise those later followers who never had seen him.
Peter writes of such followers, >Though you have not seen him, you love him= [1:8].
Love for Christ will be found in all genuine Christians. Although our devotion to Christ sadly does vary, as
we all know, it should always be there. And the reason why the Christian will sincerely love Christ is
because >he first loved us= [1 John 4:19 ]. And he loved us with a love that is so great that it surpasses
human knowledge [Eph 3:19]. The Christian must love Christ. To recognise the truth about yourself, that
you are lost and condemned without him. And that God in his amazing love chose to send his Son to do all
that was necessary to rescue you and make you his own forever. And that this included his Son becoming
a man and dying on the cross for your sins. To have a knowledge of this in your heart will mean that Jesus
Christ is no longer just a figure in history but a living present Saviour and Lord whom you love.
In human relationships it=s not too difficult to recognise when love exists between two people. The man
and woman who love each other will want to spend time together B they want to be near the one they love
9
and to get to know them. They will have an interest in everything connected to them, their likes and dislikes,
their hobbies. So it is with the person who loves Jesus Christ B they will want to know him more which
means that they will read the Bible and pray. They will want to go to church services to worship Christ with
others of the same mind. They will want to be taught by him there through the preaching of his Word. They
will want to unite themselves to other Christians whom they will love as brothers and sisters. They will want
to share Christ=s love with others who are as lost as they once were.
So we’re beginning to have a clearer picture of what one should expect to find in a genuine Christian.
A true knowledge of Jesus Christ and devotion to Jesus Christ. We have seen the various ways in
which this love will be expressed, and I want to highlight one in particular joining oneself to a Bible
believing church.
We have an example of this in Acts 2 which describes 3000 converts on the day of Pentecost being baptised
and then devoting themselves to the apostles= teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the
prayers. In other words they became closely connected with the church of Jesus Christ. Believing in Christ
and fellowshipping with Christ=s people went together.
There really cannot be any separation between love for Christ and love for his people. Where there is one
there will be, or should be, the other. If a person has no desire to share in the life of the local church this
raises questions surely about their love for Christ. John writes, >everyone who loves the Father loves
whoever has been born of him= [1 John 5:1], >If anyone says, >I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar;
for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen= [1 John
4:20]. >We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers= [1 John 3:14].
And the love that John is talking about is a sacrificial love, a person being prepared to lay down one=s life
for his fellow Christians.
If this degree of love is to exist with our brothers and sisters in Christ how much more with Christ himself.
Where there is a sincere love for Jesus Christ there will be a preoccupation with him, we will delight in him,
we will desire to know him more and to live and work for him now so that he may be glorified. We will have
a longing to see him and be with him forever. This ardent love for Christ is expressed in the life of the
apostle Paul, who could say, >For to me to live is Christ= [Phil 1:21].
Having a true knowledge of Jesus Christ is an unmistakable mark of a genuine Christian, so too is devotion
to Christ. A third distinguishing mark is a B
3. Likeness to Christ in conduct
This is something that is to be expected of each genuine Christian. Just as it is natural for children to be like
their parents in looks and temperament B to be >chips off the old block=, so too is it for Christ=s followers to
be like their master. Paul in Ephesians 5 exhorts the believers to >be [dearly loved] children. And walk in
love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us...=. The child of God is to model himself on God=s love
expressed to him in Jesus Christ. We are to aim to love one another as he loved us, which sounds incredible,
but it=s not, when you consider that the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, were made in the image and
likeness of God. Mankind was made for the purpose of reflecting God=s character to the rest of creation.
Sadly our first parents disobeyed and sin entered this world tarnishing God=s image in man but an amazing
thing happens when a person becomes a Christian. A process of change has begun in them which will
finally be perfected in heaven. This change is described by Paul as being >created [or re-created] after the
10
likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness= [Eph 4:24]. God=s original intention for man is now
going to be realised in the life of each Christian. Paul speaks of the believer who has seen the glory of God
in the face of Jesus Christ, and been indwelt by the Holy Spirit, as >being transformed into the same image
from one degree of glory to another= [2 Cor 3:18]. What all this means surely is that there should be
something different about Christians, something in their conduct that marks them out as being like Jesus
Christ.
Now we know that each Christian is only work in progress and that sin will remain with us all through this life.
We also know that this process of becoming like Christ is not something that happens automatically without
any effort on the believer=s part. There still will be slips and falls. But we have a new source of power in us,
we have no reason to sin. Which is why John writes, >No one born of God makes a practice of sinning for
God=s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God=. Then he
adds, >By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil; whoever does
not practice righteousness is not of God= [1 John 3:9,10]. John expects the children of God to stand out by
the purity of their conduct.
In Luke=s gospel chapter 6 [27-36] Jesus instructs his followers to exhibit a different kind of love to the rest
of the world which loves those who love them in return or which loves those who are like them [32-34]. His
followers must love their enemies and do good to those who hate them not expecting anything in return. If
you do this, Jesus says, >you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be
merciful, even as your Father is merciful=. It is when Christ=s followers display in their conduct the same
kind of love as God the Father that they show themselves to be his sons.
Practising purity of life, expressing love for our Christian brothers and sisters along with everyone we come
in contact with, including our enemies B these are some of the godly character traits which each Christian
is expected to display as children of God.
The marks of a Christian, as we=ve seen, encompass every part of a person=s life: our mind B we will have
a new knowledge and understanding of Jesus Christ; our will and emotions B we will love and be devoted
to Jesus Christ; our conduct B there will be purity of life and a love for our neighbour in the widest sense of
the word. Jesus Christ expects his followers to be distinguishable. He expects this to be as obvious as
distinguishing a good tree from a bad one by the fruit that is produced [Luke 7:43-45]. And this fruit will be
seen in our speech, attitudes, behaviour B that we actually do the will of God in practise [Mt 12:50].
What is our response to this? If you=re anything like me, you will be aware of how little of Christ=s likeness
is seen in your life. We each fall far short of what we should be, which should concern us and cause us to
desire to please our Saviour more. But we must remember that all our efforts must flow from gratitude to
God=s complete acceptance and delight in us now through Jesus Christ and not any attempt of ours to win
his favour. It is in response to the mercies of God to us that we are to present our bodies as a living sacrifice,
holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship [Romans 12:1]. And it=s reassuring to know how
much God is committed to making us like Christ. >He brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great
Shepherd of the sheep by the blood of the everlasting covenant [to] equip [us] with everything good that [we]
may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ= [Hebrews 13:20,21].
God=s commitment to this task should spur us on. So too should the knowledge that being like Christ will
be our eternal happiness and glory.
James Paton. Ipswich 2013.

182nd ANNUAL TENT MEETINGS - June 22/23rd 2012
The 182nd Annual Tent Meetings of the East Anglia Association took place at Athelington Hall in Suffolk on
June 22-23 June. The weather was distinctly ‘breezy’ which added its own distinctive character to the
occasion, notably the excitement of a flying projector screen! However, as usual the fellowship was warm
and the organisation faultless, at least to the average punter.
ESTHER
The guest speaker this year was Gary Benfold from Moordown Baptist Church, Bournemouth, who opened
up the book of Esther under the title, ‘There is a higher throne’. He showed the parallel between her times
and our own, and the need to recognise both the sovereignty of God and our own duty to step up and
address the challenge of evil as it confronts the nation and the church of Jesus Christ.
The fascination of the book is that whilst God is absent in name He is so evident in the way He works for the
good of His people and overturns the designs of their enemies. Furthermore, in doing so He uses the most
unlikely personalities, for as Gary showed, Esther was not the ‘goody two shoes’ that we sometimes imagine
her to have been.
In addition to Gary, we welcomed Derek Johnson, the new pastor at Beccles, who preached on the first
morning and who has recently moved to Suffolk from Ayrshire in Scotland.
OLYMPICS
Friday afternoon included a ‘Questions from the churches’ session with a panel of both men and women,
each bringing their own insights to the topics raised. It seemed to go down well and ‘scratched where people
were itching’. No reference to the creepy-crawlies, which inhabit the field!
On Saturday, Steve, alias ‘Titch’ Richards who pastors in East London and two colleagues from the
‘Grace2London’ project gave us the story of the run up to the Olympics and the way in which Christians are
seizing the opportunity to spread the message of Christ this summer and beyond.
Many exhibitors braved the journey to the far east to promote their ministries and we were especially
pleased to have another visit from Caring for Life, in Leeds. We appreciated the music, acoustics, catering
and barbecue and, as always our thanks must go to Peter Havers who owns the site and to the huge team
of volunteers who work so very hard to make it all happen.
Our acknowledgement to Grace Magazine for the use of the foregoing report
The meeting was led by the chairman, Dr Graham Eldridge (Zoar, Ipswich). He led in a
time of devotion which included the singing of the hymn, ‘A Sovereign Protector I have…’
followed by the reading of 1 Peter 5 vs 1 - 11 and followed by prayer by the Chairman.
12
Apologies from various individuals and churches were recorded and the Roll was called
when 25 of the 27 churches responded. The churches present were represented by
45 delegates, with three Association Officers also in attendance.
Following the Roll Call, we had the great joy of receiving the Church at Chelmondiston
into membership of the Association. We heard of their full agreement with our Articles
of Faith & Rules. The vote was unanimous and their Pastor, David Kelland was given
the right hand of Fellowship.
The Letter to the Churches was entitled: ‘What are the marks of a genuine
Christian?’ This had been written by Pastor James Paton, minister at ‘Zoar’, Ipswich.
There was some discussion as to whether such a full provoking Letter should be kept to
the confines of the Handbook only. The Letter was accepted and recommended for
publication in the Handbook and that it be read in the Churches. Two subjects were
brought to the meeting for consideration for the next Letter:- ( a) What is the purpose
and value of our Association? And (b) The Churches response to secular government.
The latter was chosen and the decision as to who should write it was passed to the
Pastors & Elders Forum.
It was agreed that the Autumn Prayer Meetings would be held as follows:- Whitton on
October 1st conducted by Pastor Balmer; Tunstall also on October 1st conducted by
Pastor Rushbrook and at Horham on October 2nd , conducted by Pastor Blowes.

the E & O Committee for May 20th there would be no Teach-In this year.
After a break for refreshments, kindly provided by the ladies of Bethesda Baptist Church,

REPORTS
Report to the A.B.M. – April 27th 2013
What a tremendous privilege we have in this country, in that at present we have the
freedom to preach and teach the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. It may
seem sometimes as if we’re not making much progress, but there is a consistent
week-by-week, month-by-month and year-by-year witness in these counties where the
Lord has placed us. However, we must admit that overall there has been a steady
decline in many areas. Some have recognised this pattern of decline, not only in our
region, but also across the nation and we have seen regular prayer meetings for revival
established. In the area of our Association, we have been pleased that quite a number
of people have been drawn to Stowmarket and to Grundisburgh to spend two hours on
given Saturday mornings to pray for our God to move in saving power once more across
East Anglia and indeed across the country.
Very often, over the years in my report, I have mentioned the faithful service given by the
men who serve the churches in their itinerant ministries, but in recent years we have
seen a number of our older brethren having to lay down this valuable work, many
through increasing years, but it has been very encouraging to see of late, some young
men ‘take up the baton’, so to speak. We are very thankful for the young men who took
part in the ‘Kenny Ross Academy’ at Bradfield & Rougham and how much their ministry
14
as preachers is being used and very much appreciated. We are seeing others from
other churches coming into itinerant ministry.
Speaking of younger men, we must give thanks to the Lord as we are seeing young men
being called to pastorates. Great Blakenham are benefitting from a team of younger
workers, seconded from Mickfield; Horham have very recently called Adam Blowes as
Pastor; Hugh Davis is settled as Pastor at Wetherden and Josh Bolt is working a year’s
internship at Rattlesden and there has been a joining together of the churches at
Grundisburgh and Charsfield with Colin Grimwood as joint pastor. We give thanks to
God for the many blessings in the growing work at Shepherd Drive, which includes the
appointment of Peter Newton to the ministry team. James Wilson is well settled into the
Pastoral team at Waldringfield.
The Annual Tent Meetings have been a great opportunity for making and renewing
friendships and the meetings last June were no exception. The preaching of Derek
Johnston at the opening service was a challenging introduction to the two days. Our
guest preacher was Pastor Gary Benfold of Moordown Baptist Church, Bournemouth,
he opened up the book of Esther, giving us the title of the three sermons, ‘There is a
higher throne’. There were opportunities to sit in and take part in Question & Answer
sessions and ‘Focus on the Olympics’ – this was a very informative session presented
by Steve Richards and others, with news and information regarding witnessing to both
British and foreign visitors to the Olympics. The exhibition marquee was well supported
by many visitors .
The Pastor’s & Elder’s Forum met several times during the year and a range of subjects
came up for discussion:- Marriage matters – this was a helpful presentation by Mrs
Romberger. The roles and relationships between the Executive Committee and the
Forum. There was some serious thought and discussion on the subject of the Annual
Tent Meetings. Evangelism and Training also came up and in a sense is still a focus of
the Forum. The matter of a replacement for our Administrator came up for discussion
and various comments and suggestions were discussed. Maybe the item to take up
most of the time during 2012 was that of Article 11 in the Association Articles of Faith.
There were some serious discussions as the Forum sought to modify and clarify the
NOTE to the said article. The suggested revision to Article 11 was circulated to the
churches and the responses and what action to be taken was passed to the Executive.
In the light of the criteria set in place and the outcome of the received responses the
Executive concluded that the proposed revision be dropped and that churches should
be informed accordingly before the Annual Business Meeting.
We are very thankful to the Lord that the work amongst the youth continues encouraging-
ly in a number of our churches and enthusiastically through the work of the FOY. A great
amount of effort goes into the various means of getting the young people together for
fellowship and for recreation. We also recognise the hard work undertaken in preparing
for and running the week-ends away at Letton Hall. May we pray earnestly that the Lord
will wonderfully work in the hearts and lives of these many young people and that from
among them He will raise up future church workers, missionaries, pastors and evange-
lists – all for His praise.

ASSOCIATION OF GRACE BAPTIST CHURCHES (EAST ANGLIA) LTD
TRUSTEESHIP REPORT - A.G.M. 2013
Hadleigh Heath Graveyard. No further progress in finding a buyer for the graveyard.
At present, together with Hadleigh, we have responsibilities to cover the various disused
graveyards with Public Liability Insurance at a cost of approximately £140 each P.A. –
others so covered are Aldringham, Walsham-le-Willows and Mendlesham Green.
Ipswich, Shepherd Drive. There has been little if no progress in the on-going matter
with Ipswich Borough Council concerning the completion of the lease of additional land.
The Shepherd Drive Church are making plans to extend the premises to cater for the
growing work – this on-going.
Mendlesham Green. The Chapel property still stands empty and most of the
contents have been disposed of. We anticipate that the sale of the Chapel property and
land will soon be completed, subject to the deliberations of Mid Suffolk Planning. At
present we are having to maintain disused building insurance cover and a retaining
annual sum to the Electricity Company. We have arranged for the management of the
graveyard in the meantime and will have to maintain this for many years to come..
Following the move of Pastor Peter Newton to Ipswich, we have purchased his
share of 31 Glebeway, Mendlesham and this is soon to be let to tenants. This property
will come under the Mendlesham Green Manse and Chapel Trust.
The Churches at Laxfield and Stoke Ash are progressing with their plans for chapel
extensions / modifications.

The Company seeks to help and encourage the churches to keep up to date with all
the various aspects of the law which bear down heavily upon church officers.
From time to time various conferences and seminars are organised to help church
officers keep up to date with matters of finance, church maintenance, legal requirements,
etc. Again in the past year a number of our churches have suffered by thefts of lead,
other metals and heating oil etc.. Suffolk Police have officers available to give advice
and help with security matters, including being able to advise where to obtain a range of
helpful devices to protect our properties.
The Loan and Fabric Funds are being well used by churches as they continue to
maintain and extend chapel and manse properties for the Lord’s work.
The Company continues to manage the various Trust Funds to the best advantage
of those funds, and continues to keep churches up to date with Charity and other
information which becomes available.
We praise God that we were able to tell out the Good News of a wonderful Saviour during
this last year. It is good to know that many churches are seeking to reach their immediate
area with the Gospel and in various ways. Door to door is still a good way to introduce
the Church to those around. A leaflet in the home is not always put in the bin! If it is
possible to actually speak to those in the house it is even better. A gentle and cheery
approach is always best, and try to leave knowing there is an opportunity to go back.
Some have found lonely people, those recently bereaved, health or relationship difficul-
ties. These would never be seen if the door had not been opened.
Relationship evangelism is also a good way to interact with those outside of Christ. Being
friendly at the shops, at school gates, walking the dog, sporting events, fetes, skate-
boarding, etc, etc, etc. These help to show a relationship with our Saviour that goes
beyond Sunday’s and Church.
Christianity Explored course is also another way that our Churches are spreading the
word of God.
We as a committee are always looking for ways in which we can help Churches with
evangelism and Outreach. An evening in April was a real blessing as we looked into
evangelist leaflets. Roger Carswell, via DVD, talked of what to write and showed us
some pitfalls to avoid in making a tract. Roger was full of ideas of how to use tracts as
well. If anyone wants a copy of the DVD please get in touch. Jonathan Steed gave of his
expert advice on designing and printing these leaflets. Also from this we are in the
process of creating a web page on the Association web site which has readymade
writings for various events including, Firework night(Guy Fawkes), Christmas, Easter,
Harvest.
On May 20th we look forward to John Blanchard coming with all his experience in
speaking to those with searching minds. The title will be “Where is God when things go
wrong”. DV this will be at Shepherd Drive at 7.30pm.
17
On October 7th at Kesgrave we are hoping to have Pastor Phil Wright from the church at
Wem to speak on the subject of “The Church in the Community”. Please support these
meetings with your prayers and presence!
I am sorry to report that the DVD(Answering tough questions) that Pastor Peter Newton
and Cheri have spent hours on has been superseded by Christianity Explored doing the
same thing and thus beating us to it. These are not on DVD yet but, with a little help from
us, they may be. Currently they are on their website.
Ravenswood is still being prayed over. We need a church to take this venture forward,
please pray!
There is also a Pastoral Care team that is visiting smaller and Pastorless churches. This
is helpful as it shows they are not forgotten and it helps them to view things differently
with the aim of making the church effective in the area. If you would like them to visit then
please let Peter Jackson know.
Beach Mission has been another event with great blessing. A number of young people
have achieved things they never thought possible in witnessing to those at Hunstanton.
Please continue to pray for this vital work. We are hoping this may branch out to helping
Churches with outreach in our Association.
We thank you all for your continued support of Home Mission and pray God would
answer your prayers for us as we try to encourage us all to tell out the greatness of the
Lord.
Trevor Hart – Evangelism & Outreach Secretary
SENIOR F.O.Y.
FOY Report 2013
Please pray for the senior FOY groups in our churches as they seek to evangelise young
people whilst at the same time nurture young Christians. In order to assist with this task,
the senior FOY planning group has provided opportunities for youth groups to get
together at usual events: sports, quiz evenings, summer walks and challenge evenings
where salvation is presented to young people who often have little other contact with the
gospel.
In addition to these evening events, a weekend break at Dolphin Court in Norfolk
took place in April 2012, where around 50 young people spent the weekend together in
a Christian environment enjoying activities and Bible teaching. The next weekend away
is in April 2014.
Please also pray for the young Christians who are involved in outreach activities
such as beach missions and camps. We have been considering how we can provide
training for current and future leaders. To this end, we are organising meetings for
teenagers at the tent meetings for the first time in a few years. There will also be a
training day called Connect on 13th July at Red House Farm in Stonham in conjunction
with Stephen Walker of Faith Mission. These increased opportunities are an answer to
prayer from last year’s report. Please pray that these meetings will meet the need and
open the door to future possibilities too.

GRACE BAPTIST WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION (East Anglia)
The work of GBWA(EA) continued throughout another year. The committee meets twice
a year and was pleased to welcome Mrs Patsy Jackson as a new member.
All special events in 2012 were encouraging. A large congregation met at Rattlesden to
hear from representatives of Caring For Life. The Delegates’ Meeting continued to attract
new ladies and was an opportunity to meet new secretaries of our fellowships. The time
of sharing reports and open prayer is always helpful. We were blessed by the message
ministered in word and song by Steve and Sandra Piggott at the September Rally at
Cauldwell Hall Road. The National Day Conference was held in Colchester in November.
This enabled a number of Suffolk women to attend.
Events for 2013 are all in place. In the Lord’s will we look forward to the Evening Rally
at Stoke Ash on 13th May and the Annual Rally at Crowfield on 18th September. There
will be a weekend conference at High Leigh 15-17th November. It is hoped to advertise
the Conference and also highlight the work of Friendship Link at the GBWA stand at the
Tent Meetings in June.
I was born and brought up in Birmingham where my dad was a GP originally from the
West Highlands of Scotland where I still have relations on the Isle of Lismore. After a few
years at boarding school I went to Art College to study design, right in the middle of the
'swinging sixties.' This was something of a mixed blessing, both exciting and dangerous.
I also had a dip into Eastern philosophy which released me from the more destructive
side of the drug culture which was very much part of Art college life at the time.
19
I graduated in 1970 with a degree in 3 Dimensional Design specialising in ceramics,
which explains why our house is still full of pots! Anybody want one?
AFTER COLLEGE
Following this I took a job in the NHS teaching art as part of an Occupational Therapy
team in the South West. It was at this time I met Jean who was also a Christian and we
married in Exeter in 1973. She has been a wonderful friend and encourager to me and
I thank God for giving me someone so special. We now have four grown up children and
seven grandchildren. Our son lives in Switzerland, which gives us an excuse to visit one
of the most beautiful countries in the world. All the children have inherited a measure of
artistic ability; the youngest now holds an MA from St Martin's, and it is great to see their
creative skills at work.
In 1976, after a" period of theological study I was asked to become the pastor of a church
in Lancashire; we accepted the invitation and remained there for twenty-three happy
years. In 2000 we moved to Cauldwell Hall Road Baptist Church, Ipswich, where I
continue to teach the Bible as part of our leadership team.
ENJOYING LIFE
I like writing too and have found that poetry comes fairly easily to my mind. I also have
a shot at cooking, especially curry, and it's a bit of a ritual in our house on Saturday
evenings. This interest was reinforced by a couple of trips to India, which were truly
memorable not to say 'wacky' experiences.
I really enjoy my life and find the world an amazing place, I love the visual arts, films,
folk-rock, cricket and rugby union, but I'm also aware that this thing we call 'sin' is a
massive setback and only the intervention of God can put us on the road to recovery.
Incidentally it never ceases to amaze me that God should have chosen me to serve him
in this great project and I consider it the greatest privilege possible to be supported by
his people to fulfil the ministry he has given me.
COMMENDING CHRIST
So lastly, I must add, that although I have a wonderful family and many friends, without
doubt the person I value most is the Lord Jesus Christ himself, I cannot commend him
highly enough, for I firmly believe that he is the one who meets our deepest need and
20
restores us to a relationship with God which can never end. Indeed one of the greatest
benefits of understanding and trusting Jesus is to know that all the things we are
ashamed of in ourselves can be truly forgiven and this leads to a great sense of peace
and assurance that we can meet God at last on good terms.
At the time of writing this I am just recovering from five months cancer/chemotherapy.
This experience has further impressed upon me the need to look beyond this uncertain
world to the one God has promised to those who believe in his Son.
As I close I'm not sure where you, as a reader, stand on these issues, but I would
encourage you to give them some further thought, perhaps with the help of someone
who knows. After all, we only get one life and there is no replay button, so let's be sure
we get it right asap.

BRADFIELD & ROUGHAM
'Fear or Faith?' has been our challenge as we experience massive changes within the
church at BRBC and we continue to look to our all-knowing God as we seek His
guidance for the future. Our pastoral team of David & Shirley will be leaving us to return
to the USA in June and our pastor, Kenny Ross, is returning to his homeland of Scotland
in August. We are therefore urgently seeking a new Senior Pastor who will lead us
forward into a new phase of activity. We praise God for His goodness to us as a
fellowship and we have been richly blessed by the faithful ministry of Kenny over these
past 8 years. We have sensed the moving of His Spirit within the church and young and
old are being challenged and encouraged. The work on Moreton Hall is now established
and growing, but we need more of God's grace and strength to reach out more and more
into the local area and for Him to provide the resources that are needed. But our God is
faithful, and by faith His church will be built.

Once again we are indebted to the faithful ministry of our itinerant preachers. We have
been encouraged by increased attendance at the Ladies Meeting and by several Dutch
visitors throughout the year. The secretary and treasurer sometimes feel concerned that
there are no younger members to take on these roles. However we live a day at a time
and thank God for his many blessings to us as a fellowship.

CHARSFIELD
Last year we asked you to pray that ‘we will be given wisdom to know the Lord’s will in
respect of decisions about the future’ and said that we very much felt ‘the need of a
Pastor to work with us and to take up many village opportunities.’ Those prayers are
being answered and we are greatly encouraged by the willingness of Pastor Colin
Grimwood to take pastoral oversight of Charsfield whilst remaining Pastor at Grundis-
burgh. We are also very grateful for the willingness shown by the Grundisburgh Church
to share with us and we so much enjoy our closer fellowship with them. We are seeking
an evangelistic worker to work with Colin in the two Churches and the surrounding area.
The arrangement will be reviewed after three years. We ask that you join us in praying
that the Lord will richly bless Colin and the Churches in this area, and that many will be
saved in these villages. We continue to greatly benefit also from the faithful ministry of
our itinerant preachers to whom we are truly thankful for their interest and commitment
over many years. Thank you for your prayers.

We have been encouraged over the last year, by some new faces in our Sunday
meetings, and a recent application for membership. It has also been a privilege to
continue to have contact with adults, young people and children through the varied
weekday activities that take place on a regular basis. We are very grateful to all those
who play an active part in the life of the fellowship. However, we are looking to the Lord
to further strengthen the structure of the church, and we long to see bigger break-
throughs and greater man power so we can take full advantage of the opportunities that
present themselves.

We thank you for your prayers. Our one service on a Sunday continues and we thank the
itinerants who take this service. We have started door to door visitation with the help of
Mike Bostock and his team. Although we have had many promises that they will come
to the special services, they have yet to come. There have been some good conversa-
tions and we are building bridges. The Womens Fellowship has quite a few unconverted
so is a real encouragement. The Lunch and Listen still attracts over 50 guests and is a
good witness. We still are looking for a Pastor and seeking God's guidance in this.

God has answered our prayers for help in a remarkable way and we give Him all the
praise! We now have a very enthusiastic team from Mickfield Evangelical Church
working with us with a tremendous variety of skills. Four members of the team are
preaching on a regular basis and we feel both blessed and challenged by their ministry.
Two members of the team are volunteering in the local Primary School and bi-monthly
Community lunches have commenced. Our outreach to local ladies and Barham Care
Home has been maintained and we seek to joyfully glorify God and lovingly share Jesus
in our community.

Another year in the life and ministry of the church has passed with the faithful ministry of
Pastor Colin. We have sort to reach out to the children, teenagers, Ladies and Men at
their meetings. The printed page has gone round the village and we have held special
outreach events. It has been of great encouragement to see a few ladies in to our
morning services and we look to the Lord as we go forward working together with the
church at Charsfieid. Our prayer is that we might see God at work in saving souls and
building His church.

2011 was a turbulent year. Hopes of a pastor met - and then dashed. Beset by difficulties
and unrest; people leaving, disagreements. Discouragement prevalent. But we sought
the Lord and He heard our cry. We held special meetings for prayer and discussion. And
a climate of change, of hope, of "God is amongst us" began to emerge. We launched
our Team Ministries, setting up five teams to lead and guide us in our Learning,
Evangelism, Prayer, Cross cultural mission and Pastoral Care. And we look to the Lord
to demonstrate his presence amongst us in tangible ways during 2012.

IPSWICH - WHITTON
This year has been dominated by our building refurbishment which started in Novem-
ber. We thank God for the provision of resources that has enabled us to undertake the
first stage of this major project. Our Sunday base has been the local primary school
and most other things have been devolved into homes or other local facilities. This has
taken us out of our comfort zone and challenged our thinking on how we do ‘church’.
We hope to move back into our building in June and looking ahead we have an in-
creased desire to be getting the good news of Jesus out to our community and accom-
panying this with ministries of help and support for those who with live amongst and
minister to.

IPSWICH - ZOAR
Following a year of concern in 2011 for our Pastor James Paton's wife Jackie as she
battled with cancer, Jackie sadly lost the fight with the disease and was called Home to
be the Lord in June; we were enormously upheld as a Church by the prayers of God's
people throughout the region and by the support of visiting preachers during this time.
James was able to resume his pastoral work in the late summer. In July we held a
Crossroads Holiday Club outreach and were encouraged as we saw some 25 primary
school age young people attend each day's activities. We are challenged as we see the
need for outreach to the University students and young people locally.

A sad year in that two long-standing committed members of the church were called home
leaving a big gap, that we pray the Lord will fill. The Holiday Bible Club that we held in
the February half term was a great encouragement with numbers significantly up on the
previous two years. It has also been good to be able to take a number of assemblies in
the local primary schools and some lessons in the high school. Our Friday clubs continue
to be well attended and we trust some have benefitted from the Christianity Explored
courses we’ve been able to run. We are hoping to call a new full time worker in the near
future, and would appreciate prayer for that and, as ever, for conversions and growth.

We have been encouraged and challenged throughout the year by the faithful ministry of
our Pastor. We plan to hold a Christianity Explored course starting in February 2013, one
or two have shown an interest for which we are thankful. Work amongst our young
people on Friday evenings with two age groups meeting in succession is encouraging
and numbers are increasing. Sunday Club & Bible Class are also going well, and we are
thankful for all the children/ teenagers and their parents that we are in contact with. At
our Coffee Stop on Thursday mornings we have quite a few people attend who do not
come to church,we feel this is another important form of outreach.
We now have Babes & Toddlers meeting weekly, again after a slow start the number is
increasing. With all our contacts with these young people, our prayer is that they might
come to know the Lord Jesus as their Saviour
We are planning to hold a youth service monthly on the third Sunday evening, especially
designed for young people.

This was a year that we have to look more closely for blessing, ever thankful to our Lord
for continued grace but longing for conversions. An unusual number of funerals highlight-
ed that the church is seen as a service provider rather than a community to belong to.
Our regular outreach continues to connect with un-churched people; children and adults,
but there are no visible signs of spiritual awakening. Generous gifts of wealth and time
have allowed us to renovate the kitchen. Five of our church members attend University
away from the area, and three others are living and working away.

The past year has seen our fellowship grow and enjoy ministry from within and without
the membership. We have been blessed with teaching from visiting speakers that has
dovetailed with studies led by our three elders. Friday nights are busy times, with both
youth groups meeting weekly during term time. Our 'Meal with a Message' programme
has continued, held in the village hall, and it has been encouraging to make contact with
local people, as we did when we held an evening of Carols in December and had a stand
at the village fete. A thoroughly good time was had by all at our 'Running the Race'
holiday club during the summer, and our Sunday School has been blessed with new
teachers. We held another Christianity Explored course last year, and plan to hold
further courses and develop more Bible study and prayer among the members and
attenders of the church. We have enjoyed a number of 'special' events, including a visit
from Creation Research's John Mackay, and Ian McCormick (the 'Jellyfish' man). It is our
desire to see the people in our area reached with the good news of Jesus, and that we
will all become more like the Lord Jesus. "By this all will know that you are My disciples,
