THE TEN COMMANDMENTS:

THE FIRST THREE COMMANDMENTS TEACH US TO RESPECT GOD AND THE LAST
SEVEN TEACH US TO RESPECT THE LIFE, PROPERTY, REPUTATION OF PEOPLE
AND OUR OWN SELVES:
FIRST COMMANDMENT: You shall not have any strange gods before Me.
 Sometimes we forgot to worship and honor God because we are
tempted to give more importance to money, possessions, awards
or power.
SECOND COMMANDMENT: You shall not use the name of God in vain.
 This tells us to speak of God, of saints, and of holy things with
reverence. We should not use the name of God or the name of
Jesus to express surprise or anger.
THIRD COMMANDMENT: Keep holy the Sabbath Day.
 Another way to respect for God is by prayer and public worship.
 Catholics have set Sunday – the first day of the week- the special
day of worship for the Creator. On this day Catholics worship
God together by celebrating the Eucharist.
FOURTH COMMANDMENT: Honor your father and mother.
 Respect for parents is one duty we owe to our parents no matter
how famous we may become in later life. We show respect and
love for our parents by obeying them, helping them and praying
for them.
 We make our home a place of joy and peace when we love and
respect our parents.
FIFTH: You shall not kill.
 This tells us to respect life. We respect our life by eating balanced
-meals, getting enough sleep and rest. We respect the life of
others by not taking revenge, by protecting the unborn child, also
by protecting the reputation of the others.
 We must remember that God gives everyone the right to live and
the opportunity to make his or her life worthwhile.
SIXTH COMMANDMENT: You shall not commit adultery.
NINTH COMMANDMENT: You shall not covet your neighbors wife.
 These two commandments teach us to respect our bodies and
our emotions as well as of others. They both deal with
commands on purity.
 We need to avoid the following :
-idleness
-bad companions
-immodesty in dressing
-indecent books, plays , movies, magazines and newspapers
* These corrupt the minds even more.
SEVENTH COMMANDMENT: You shall not steal:
TENTH COMMANDMENT: You shall not covet your neighbors goods.
 These two commandments teach us to respect the property of
others as well as our own property.
 It also means taking care of the creation to keep it green and
growing.
EIGHTH COMMANDMENT: You shall not bear false witness against your
neighbor.
Our name is important to us. It is part of our identity. For this reason, it is
against the law to use a person’s name without that person’s permission. The
eighth commandment reminds us that people care about their good name or
reputation. We are entrusted with others. Gossiping about others and lying
about them breaks that trust. Whereof, put away lying and speak truth each
one with his neighbor, because we are members of one another (Ephesians
4:25).
