Seatwork Research

1. In your own words, explain what is the difference of Enthalpy and Entropy is.

- The heat content of a system is called Enthalpy. Systems have a natural inclination to

transition from a high to a low energy state. While Entropy is a measurement of a system's

unpredictability or disorder. The more disorder there is, the higher the system's entropy.

2. What is Reversible and Irreversible Process in Thermodynamics.

- A reversible process is one in which the system and its environment may both revert to their

original states by taking the opposite path with no other change anywhere else in the

universe. For example extension of springs.

- An irreversible process is one in which the system and its surroundings are unable to revert

to their original conditions. Example, heat transfer and diffusion.

3. In our last meeting, we discussed 4 out of 6 ideal Gas Processes, now , list down all 6 ideal Gas

Processes and explain it in your own words.

1. Isobaric process - is a thermodynamic process taking place at constant pressure. Example,

water boiling in a pot over burner, heat is passed between the burner and the pot when

water boils in a pot over a burner, but the pressure remains constant.

2. Isothermal process - This is a process where the temperature of the system is kept

constant.

3. Isovolumetric process – a thermodynamic process in which the volume remains constant .

Example, cooking in a pressure cooker since the volume of it is constant.

4. Adiabatic process- thermodynamic process in which there is no heat transfer . Example,

pendulum swinging in a vertical plane.

5. Isentropic process - isentropic process is an idealized thermodynamic process that is both

adiabatic and reversible.

6. Polytropic - An expansion or compression of a gas in which the quantity is held constant.

4. Using the simulation we used, (link at the instruction on assignment tab), include the numbers

used and results of the test.

• Observe and explain what will happen when you add heat into constant volume process.

- I observed that when you add heat in constant volume process, at T=990K the movement of

the particles are slow but after a few seconds at T=800K the particles seems to move faster

and as the temperature goes up, the pressure will go up also.

• Observe and explain what will happen when you remove heat into constant volume

process.

- I observed that when you remove heat into constant volume, at T=800K the particles are

moving but after it cools down, at T=0K the particles noticeably to be not moving and as the

temperature goes down, the pressure will also drop.

• Observe and explain what will happen if you add work ( compress volume) into an ideal

gas without constants.

- I observed that if you compress volume into an ideal gas without constants, the heavy

particles ( 308 particles) has a diameter of 8.8nm, P=40.7 atm and T=300K, and after

compressing the system to 5.0nm, the pressure rises at P=71.9atm but the temperature

remains constant at T=300K.
