Begin answering the questions below to develop your idea:

n In your own words, what does a zine allow individual artists to do?
Zines allow a unique way to share your work with your world. In a simple book like form.

Why is being able to create a zine significant?

It can show awareness for issues and art. Give voices to those who cannot give their own.

n For project #5, you are creating a written piece that will go on to be part of a layout design you
create. It is recommended that you begin project #5 by creating your written portion first.

You are to write about YOUR OWN ARTWORK. It is recommended that you set up your
four-page zine so that each of our four projects from this semester gets their own page. If you
have artwork from outside of this class, feel free to write about those pieces. Artwork could
include: sketches, paintings, photography, doodles, films, animations, etc. (essentially any form of
visual art).

When you have selected the pieces you would like to write about, consider what you would like
to talk about in regard to each piece.

Potential topics you may want to work from as you write about each piece
are as follows, but not limited to:

The default topic for Project #5 is to use the answers you created for your
Project #1- #4 Reflection questions. The topics below are alternative topics.

1. Talk about how you came up with the idea for this particular piece. Explain the process you
used to create this artwork. What do you feel are this work’s strongest aspects? (for
example: composition, color, content, etc.) What about this piece do you feel could be
strengthened/improved upon? If you had to redo this project, what would you do differently
and why?

2. Is a viewer’s interpretation as valid as an artist’s interpretation? If so, why? If not, why not?
Provide examples. Use your own experience and work as evidence.

3. Do artists have an obligation to tell the truth in their work? If so, why do they have this
responsibility? If they do not have this obligation, what role should their art play in society?
Provide examples or artists who do, or do not, use their work to tell the truth. What role
does your artwork play in society at large and to you?

4. Write about the best piece of artwork you have ever created. Describe what you made and
how you made it. Explore what makes that piece your best. Do you aim to replicate the
success you had with that piece? If so, why? Will your expectations change as you grow as an
artist?

5. What is art? Define the word and explain what art means/represents to you personally. Explain
what qualities a piece must possess to be considered artwork. Do your own pieces meet these
expectations?

n What pieces of imagery (photos or artwork) will you use to accompany

your written work? THE IMAGERY MUST BE YOUR OWN.
I made two comics that will accompany the text of the zine.

n How will your selected imagery benefit your text? (i.e. does your imagery help
to explain a point? Does your imagery provide a visual example of your subject matter?
Does your imagery simply fill space? If so, is it distracting or irrelevant?

n In your own words, what does InDesign Do?

Help make comics or zines for artists or creators.

n How is InDesign different from Illustrator and Photoshop?

It has less tools but it has enough to make a book. It has no pencil or pen tool but shapes and text.
It is only made for making books, zines and more like that.

n What is layout design?

A way to arrange all kinds of elements like text, pictures and shapes.

n Why is it important to use a grid for layout design?

Look to class examples when it comes to layout design. Consider using InDesign’s templates for
your layouts.
Grids help make your pages look nice and organized. It helps with page layouts.
