MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

S4 ALPHA MAR-E ASSIGNMENT #1

Make an essay about the maintenance system onboard indicating how important the
manufacturer’s manual to the maintenance system and the factors to consider when
planning a maintenance on a specific machinery.

Maintenance plan is a necessary action to be taken onboard a ship. Without a

maintenance plan, we cannot execute properly on how to troubleshoot machineries when it
malfunctioned. It is also the foundation of ship’s overall maintenance mechanism. The primary
goal of a maintenance plan is to ensure that the work is completed in the shortest amount of time
while remaining as efficient and cost-effective as possible.
There are things to consider when doing a maintenance plan. According to the ISM, code
shipowners must have written plans, procedures, and guidelines for shipboard operations on a
specific vessel (including how cargo is loaded, stowed, and secured) as well as maintenance of
the ship and its cargo equipment. This inevitably means that in the event of a loss or damage,
these procedures will be scrutinized. In this context, the reporting system mandated by the Code,
through which reports on problems encountered are generated, is of even greater importance.
Appropriate corrective action must be taken to address the flaw in the ship's operation. The
change is then monitored to ensure that the revised system works properly. All of these
procedures must be meticulously documented. When considering the factors that determine
whether a vessel is seaworthy, ISM cannot be overlooked.
Manufacturer’s manual is very important in maintenance system because it is a is a
'super-tool' for communication that aims to systematize and standardize maintenance concepts,
procedures, and work instructions, as well as provide guidance on maintenance activities while
encouraging the implementation of necessary management. These activities require practice.
Without a manual, it is possible to lose work consistency. Employees can perform the same task
in a variety of ways. A lack of documented procedures can lead to workplace errors, accidents,
or injuries, which can cost the company a lot of money.
