1. Determine the location of running water
and soap or soap substitutes
2. Assemble equipments:
3. Assess your hands:
 Nails should be kept short
 Remove all jewelry
 Check the hands for any break in the skin
such as hangnails or cuts
4. Turn on the water and adjust the flow
5. Wet the hands thoroughly under running water
, and apply soap from hands up to the wrists
 Hold the hands lower than the elbows so
that the water flows from the wrists down
to the fingertips
 If liquid soap is used, apply 2-5 ml; bar
soaps, granules or sheets are used, rub
them firmly between hands.
6. Thoroughly wash and rinse the hands
 Use firm, rubbing and circular movements
to wash the palm, back, and wrists of
each hand . Interlace the fingers and
thumbs and move the hands back and
forth. Continue this motion for at least 15
seconds.
 Rub the fingertips against the palm of the
opposite hand.
 Rinse hands.
7. Thoroughly dry hands and arms ( fingers to
wrist & forearms ).
8. Turn off the water.

II.HANDLING STERILE TRANSFER FORCEPS

1. Pick up the handle of the forceps with the
thumb and and the middle finger. Keep
prongs together.
2. When removing the forceps from a
container, lift the forceps without
touching any part of the container that is
not in direct contact with the disinfectant
solution.
3. Hold the forceps with prongs always
pointing downward.
4. Remove excess solution by observing any
of the following techniques:
 Gently tap the prongs together
directly over ( but not touching
the rim ) the container OR
 Gently tap the forceps with the
index finger directly over the
container.
5. Hold sterile forceps above the waist level.
Keep the prongs of the forceps within
vision while using them.
6. Place the sterile forceps back to the
sterile container with prongs together.
Keep the prongs of forceps apart when
soak in a disinfecting solution.

III. OPENING A STERILE COVERED CONTAINER OR
CANISTER

1. Lift the cover of the container so that the
inner part of the lid is positioned
downward.
2. Invert the cover by placing it upside down
on a flat surface only when necessary
3. Consider the rim of the cover and the
outside of the container to be
contaminated.
DO NOT touch the rim of the container
4. Cover the container carefully by not
touching the rim of the container
If the cover was placed on a flat surface,
touch the outer space of the cover and
push it to the side of the table while the
other hand hold/grab the part that comes
in contact with the surface table
5. Discard as “unsterile“ any unused object
taken from the container.

IV. PREPARING A STERILE FIELD

1. Using sterile forceps pick up the drape
carefully to prevent it from touching the
contaminated parts of the canister.
2. Return the cover of the canister.
3. With one hand, pick up the corner of the
drape with the thumb and middle finger.
4. Place the sterile forceps back to the
sterile container with the prongs
together.
5. Slightly move distantly from the working
table.
6. Allow drape to unfold, keeping it above
the waist and work area and away from
the body.
7. With one hand, pick up carefully another
corner of the drape laterally to the other
side. Hold the drape well away from the
body

8. Hold drape straight to the work surface.


 If drape is too big for the tray,
hold the top bottom of the drape
towards you then fold drape
vertically away from you.
 If the drape is enough to cover
the tray, fold the drape vertically
away from you
9. While holding the folded drape, position
the bottom half over the tray. Lay the
drape on a clean and dry surface tray,
with the opening towards you.
10. When opening a sterile tray, fanfold the
top half of the sterile linen away from
you. Edges of the sterile linen should not
be touching any unsterile part.
