SO? FILTER ELEMENT INSPECTION What's a Hole and What's a False Alarm? Low dust buildup or a hole? Donaldson receives filter elements for inspection cach year that customers believe have devel oped hols. Upon inspection and testing in aur fabs, muny of these suspect filters yrrove to» have no holes or leaks. Most oftca these filters have areas with low dust buildup where 1 comes throught the media wien inspected with a Light inside the filter, bul in fact function peafeeily. How do you tell the difference between a hote and Jow clase buildup? Low dust can look like a media hole or crack The probleit is that dust buildup shuts out light completely, while low dust buildup permi light to shine through the media, The contrast is significant ancl therefore looks: t0 be erack or hole in the media. The difference in contrast berween a leak andl low dust builelap is vomewhat less, but should be identifiable. The deceiving low dust areas appear most often at the fold or at plastisel heading, Photo one shows i filter that has low dust buildup on the pleats or folds, but is functioning efficiently - no heles, no leaks. PHOTO F - This filter does nat lek. The teght areas have fow dese buitdup at the folds 1 mee Heck, which allows the lighs to shine through the media, Ne hok Form #1400-112 In photo two light is coming through the beacled area as well as at the folds. Again no holes, no leaks Photo three shows a hole that isa leaker, The light areas helow the hole are nota holes, but rather areas where dust has not collected on the plastisol beading, PHOLO 2 - This jitter dees not leak. The light areas are iow dust bullup ai the folds aad on the plassisol — PHOTO 3 - This photo shows one small hole in uke media with the brigit kamp filament shining through, The light areas below the hole and om ihe beading are not a holes, It’s easy to see how people can confuse low dust buildup with holes. The seeret to identifying a hole isto realize that when there is a hole you actually see the bright lamp filament shining through the while low dust buildup is merely a bright area where the media is folded and not covered with Another basic siga of a hole is dust on the liner or endap of the clean air side of the filter. If there is no sign of dust on the clean-side liner of the filter you ean be quite sure that there is no Icak, This photo shows obvious dust trails on the endcap of the clean side of the filter.
