Unbundling of masscommunication 

1. As a library study professor, how do you see the role of libraries evolving in
the digital age?

We are already in the digital age. It’s here already and has come to stay. So gone
are the days of libraries performing its role in the traditional environment. Having
said this, the role of libraries in the digital era will keep on growing and become
multifarious. We are now in living in the fourth industrial revolution and of course
the technologies of this revolution is changing the roles of libraries significantly in
terms of collection development (from print to more of e –resources), services and
even skills requirement for librarians and library users.

2. What do you think are the benefits of introducing library and information
science to the department of mass communication?
Thank you very much for this question. The introduction of Library and
information science to Mass communication is a welcome development and
quite heartwarming for me. You see Librarianship, though its multidisciplinary
and in nature, has its root in humanities. It is a Social science subject and
revolves around dealing with people. As regards the benefit, it will improve the
professionalism our graduates because they will be well exposed to the right
and appropriate courses necessary for their professional development. Mass
communication has a broad spectrum of career: advertising, broadcasting,
journalism, publishing, social media, media literacy. So it will help us produce
qualified and well-grounded graduates in the field of Library and information
science.

3. In what ways do you see the fields of library studies and mass
communication intersecting? In diverse ways.
I’m sure you know that disciplines are now transdisciplinary in nature. The
border or bridge between disciplines have collapsed. Both disciplines deal with
information services, processing and dissemination. Therefore, they will keep
interesting in the area of information literacy, media literacy, and publishing
and information service provision.

Within all three disciplines, Polish researchers were concerned with


information objects (sources, resources, tools), among which we should include
media
and communication tools, as well as communication processes, which encompass
mass
communication and the influence of media on the soc
4. How do you think the current state of libraries and information resources affects
the media landscape and society at large?

5. What advice would you give to individuals interested in pursuing a career in


library and information science?
It is a good direction to trail. It is a 21 st century course because with a degree in
Library and information science you can work anywhere in the world. You will
always be relevant as a Librarian wherever you find yourself. Am a living
testimony.

6.With the rise of e-books and digital media, what do you think is the future of
physical libraries and books?
People will always need the physical library. Remember there are other services
rendered libraries aside provision of books. With the development of maker space,
Research commons, and information literacy classes in libraries, the rise of e books
and digital media is nothing to worry about. Am sure you know that some of these
e books cannot be downloaded or used in public domains free. Libraries still need
to pay for their subscription.

7. What do you believe are some of the biggest challenges facing libraries and
information professionals today, and how can we overcome them? Finance.
Dwindling resources in the face of the economic recession. The rising cost of
acquiring latest technologies.

8. Can you discuss any recent research or initiatives in the field of library studies
that you find particularly exciting or promising? User engagement (makerspace),
Inclusive Library service ( this was from my Fulbright experience in the US, Data
Librarianship, Open Data, Open Science, Environmental sustainability and 4IR
Technologies and its application to Libraries, ChatGPT and Reference services in
libraries. Mobile apps and libraries

9. how do you see the role of libraries and librarians in promoting information
literacy and combatting misinformation in today's society? Librarian have a major
role to play and they have been trained in the area of information literacy.
Information literacy is the ability to find, evaluate, organize, use, and communicate
information in all its various formats. They keep standing in the gap to empower
people on how to find information, use information appropriately and in a fair way,
recognize the right information.
10. Are the facilities available to accommodate new students/ Yes. Spacious and
adequate lecture rooms, experienced staff, well-resourced library (department and
the main library), internet access for students and much more an enabling
environment.
