The Syllabus of Japanese Exercise 1 (1st year students)
2020-2021 Summer Semester

Duration: 1 semester (about 4.5 hours per week)

Course descriptions:
This course aims to introduce elements of the Japanese language studies including but not
limited to reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

Upon the completion of course, you are expected to know the following:
● reading and writing of hiragana, katakana, and around 90 kanji letters,
● approximately 400 words and expressions,
● greeting and self-introduction,,
● constructing simple sentences and expressions about numbers, time, positon, shopping, and
counting,
● expressing about family and appearance of a person,
● expressing about one’s idea and opinion in a simple sentence.

Grading scale and policy:


0-50=1 (Insufficient), 51-69=2 (Sufficient), 70-79=3 (Good), 80-89=4 (Very good) and 90-100=5
(Excellent)

Attendance 10%
Regular attendance and active participation is expected. Exception will only be given to students
who demonstrated the knowledge of materials covered in the course by testing.

Homework 20%
To submit all and no late work is accepted. Exception will only be given to students who
demonstrated the knowledge of materials covered in the course by testing.

Final exam 70%

Expectations:
Students are expected to do self-study on vocabularies, grammars and kanji before coming to
each class. Quiz will also be given to you but the results are not reflected on your final grade.

Notes
In the final examination, if the teacher considers that a student has cheated, the student's
examination mark will be zero.
For example, you may submit an answer written by someone else as your own.
Any other behaviour that the teacher considers to be cheating will also qualify as cheating.
