Test method for colourfastness
to Dry Cleaning ISSUE DATE: 03 /02 /2021
ATCC TM 132

1. PURPOSE / SCOPE
This method used to determining the resistance of the colour of textiles of all kinds
of dry cleaning
2. Principle
A specimen of the textile in contact with cotton fabric, multifibre swatch and non
corrodible steel disc is agitated in perchloroethylene and then dried in air. Any
change in colour is assessed with standard grey scale.
Any staining is assessed by using grey scale for staining.
3. Apparatus
 An accelerated laundering machine for rotating closed canisters in a
thermostatically controlled water bath at 40 ± 2rpm
 Standard stainless containers 7.5 cm dia X 12.5 cm aprox 500ml capacity.
which can be closed using solvent resistant gaskets.
 Non corrodible steel discs 30 ± 2 mm diameter X 3 ± 0.5 mm smooth and
free from rough edges weight 20 ± 2 gms.
 Undyed cotton twill cloth weighing 270 ± 70 g/m2 free from finished and
cut into swatches 12 X 12 cm.
 Multifibre test fabrics 8 mm containing acetate, cotton, nylon, silk, viscose,
rayon, and wool.
4. Specimen
 If the textile to be tested is fabric use three specimens each 10 X 5 cm
with the longer dimensions parallel to the warp direction of the fabric
 If the textile to be tested is Yarn use three specimens each 10 X 5 cm with
the longer dimensions parallel to the wale direction of the fabric
5. Procedure
 Prepare a bag with inside dimensions of 100 mm X 100 mm using undyed
cotton twill cloth ( 270 ± 70 ) g/m2 by sewing together two squares of this
cloth around three sides
 Place the composite specimen and 12 steel disc of size 30 ± 2 mm
diameter X 3 ± 0.5 mm height and mass 20 ± 2 gms inside the bag and
finally close the bag by rope.
 In a hood prepare perchloroethylene /detergent solution to a 1000ml
volumetric flask fill partially with perchloroethylene and add 10 ml of
detergent.(perk sheen 324) shake make up the volume to 1000ml by
adding perchloethylene for removing cloudiness add 0.6 ml water and
shake until the solution is no longer cloudy..This mixture produces a 1%
charge volume /volume at 75% RH.
 In the hood place the bag in the standard container 500 ml add 200ml of
above solution of temperature 30 ± 2°C
 Close all containers and place in the rotational mechanical device and run
for 30 min at temperature 30 ± 2°C.
 After 30 minutes remove all containers from mechanical device and place
it in fuming hood, remove all the bag from the container, withdraw
specimen, place it b/w layers absorbent paper to remove surplus solvent.
 Air dry the specimen by hanging in the fume hood at 60 ± 5°C
 Allow specimen to conditioning at 65 ± 5 % RH and 21± 2°C. For 1 hour
before evaluating.

 Prepare the test specimen and staining fabric for evaluation by trimming
off ravelled yarn and lightly brushing off any loose fibre and yarn of the
fabric surface.
 Assess the change in colour of the specimen and the staining of the
adjacent fabric with reference to original specimen and adjacent fabric. by
using grey scale.
