Exercises Page 6 (Drama in ELT)

A. Read the following script.

1. What types of drama is it?
Answer: The type of drama “Little Wishes” is comedy, because it ends happily and
combines both humorous (at the beginning) and serious content. In my opinion, the
humorous moment occurred when Rob got his cup of coffee spilled on him because of the
genie’s magic and Sam teased him for that). While the serious content occurred mostly when
the genie asked the barista to rub her lamp, and told the barista to make three wishes since
she was the genie’s current master after rubbing the lamp.

2. What is the conflict in the story?

Answer: The conflict in the story is within the character in her (the barista) desire. When the
barista was given the chance to make three wishes after rubbing the genie’s lamp, she was
confused and didn’t have any idea of what she wanted. So, she asked the genie’s experiences
with her previous masters and the genie’s opinions on her ‘what-if’ questions on the wishes.

3. How does the conflict develop in the story?

Answer: The conflict develops when the barista was asked to make three wishes by a genie.
The genie recommended the barista to make little wishes because big wishes might come
with big consequences. The barista, however, was confused and not sure that she wanted
wishes at that time. The barista then asked the genie’s experiences with previous masters.
After the genie told the story, she found Rob and Sam who had been kicked out were still
waiting in front of the coffee shop, then went inside and teased the genie. Hearing that, the
barista was annoyed and accidentally made a wish for the two people to leave her and the
genie alone. Exactly, the both of them left the coffee shop and didn’t let other people come in
to let the barista and the genie be alone. Unfortunately, the barista had accidentally used one
of the three precious wishes.

4. Explain the plot of the story!

Answer: The plot of the story consists of orientation/exposition, conflict/complication,
climax and resolution:

• Orientation/Exposition: The story begins with introduction of characters and the

setting. The situation took place in a coffee shop, while the introduced characters in the
beginning are Genie (a woman in a genie outfit), a barista of a coffee shop, Rob and Sam (the
customers of the coffee shop). The story continues with the revelation of the secret of the
genie who turned out to be able to grant her master’s request if that person has rubbed her
lamp. The two customers of the coffee shop knew the secret, and they approached the genie,
the genie chased them away using her magic.

• Conflict/Complication: The conflict in the story is within the character in her (the
barista) desire, in which she wasn’t sure to make wishes although she had that privilege
making three wishes. The conflict develops when the barista was asked to make three wishes
by a genie. The genie recommended the barista to make little wishes because big wishes
might come with big consequences. The barista, however, was confused and not sure that she
wanted wishes at that time. The barista then asked the genie’s experiences with previous
masters. After the genie told the story, she found Rob and Sam who had been kicked out
were still waiting in front of the coffee shop, then went inside and teased the genie. Hearing
that, the barista was annoyed and accidentally made a wish for the two people to leave her
and the genie alone. Exactly, the both of them left the coffee shop and didn’t let other people
come in to let the barista and the genie be alone. Unfortunately, the barista had accidentally
used one of the three precious wishes.
• Climax : The tension reaches its highest part when there was a lost
girl named Sally wanted to go in the coffee shop to find her mother, but she was stopped by
Rob and Sam. The barista then jumped up angrily and made a second wish for those two
guys would go away from the coffee shop, the genie then granted it. The girl, Sally, looked
upset and then asked for a help to find her mother. She asked if the genie could help her find
her mother by using the magic, but genie couldn’t do that since she had a master.
• Resolution : The barista then tried to entertain Sally by getting her
something to drink with lots of whipped cream. Finally, the barista decided to make the final
wish for Sally’s mother to find her, the genie then praised her and granted the wish. Soon
after that, Sally’s mother entered the coffee shop and looked for Sally. They both met and
were very relieved. The genie told the barista that she had chosen the wish wisely and asked
whether she regretted it or not. Without regret, the barista said that she liked the idea of being
a genie who did nice things for people. The story ends happily after the genie granted three
wishes of the barista with the last wish that was showing the kindness of the barista. After
finished the wishes of her current master, the genie then said goodbye to the barista and
wanted to find another master.

5. Explain the theme of the story!

Answer: The story brings the theme of wish and kindness. Big wishes may sometimes big
consequences, but little wishes as acts of kindness can be amazing and useful for others. The
kindness shown by the barista can be emulated. When she was given the opportunity to make
three wishes, she didn’t even think about her own advantages/desires, although she was a
little careless about the first wish, but she ended up using the last wish surely which is to help
the little girl’s mother in finding her losing child, instead of using it to fulfil her own desire.

B. Observe the pictures which are related to drama performance, then give your opinion
about the stage and costume.
 Picture 1: In my opinion after observing the costume and the stage, it is Indonesian
kingdom themed story. The costumes of the casts fit the theme very well. I think the first
person from the left is the queen, the second one is the princess, the third one is the
guardsman, and the last person is the king. The stage also fits the story of kingdom very
well, as we know a king is supposed to sit in higher place than the others and it is showed
in the stage arrangement.
 Picture 2: From my point of view after seeing the costumes worn by the casts, it tells a
story about something related to Javanese culture (whether it’s about Javanese traditional
weddings or Javanese royals). Blangkon and Batik (for men) and Kebaya (for women) are
Javanese traditional clothes, and they look really good in this picture. For the stage, I’m
not really sure if it is the stage where the casts to perform/to act in, I think it is more like
a stage for taking pictures.
 Picture 3: In my opinion after seeing the picture 3’s costumes and stage, it tells a story
about a student (the girl in a white shirt) with her mother/guardian (the one who’s on the
left side) went to meet the teacher (the one who sits in the middle) in the teacher office.
While the other person who brought the drink is probably either the owner of the school
canteen or one of the school staffs.
