 INTRODUCTION

Website design is important. Its the aspect of creating a website for the purpose

of relaying relevant information, market the company, and be the source of e-commerce

for the company. For the purpose of this case study, the main focus will be on the

website of http://www.industrialpainter.com. This company is professional contractor

company for structural painting, contract work and professional painting. The case

study focal point of the navigation, design, and how it will affect the company. The

problems posed will be thoroughly explained and how the relevant parties should

overcome the problems facing the company website.

 BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The website industrialpainter.com is a company website that focuses on

contracting business and their main forte is structural painting and a place to find

professional painters. Their website design is simple and old. It looks like the company

haven’t updated the website in a while. It should note that some company does not

focus on the website as much because nowadays most companies would apply the use

of social media to market their services. However, having a website is also important

because it makes a company appear more presentable and professional. The important

part is updating the website and refresh the image of the website as to give it new life.

As with any website design aspect, the first thing should be stressed in a website is the

aspect of navigation, design layout, and ease of access. Visitors trying to find relevant

information about a company would struggle if there is no proper navigation to the

website.

In the aspect of navigation, it is important to focus on the main aspect of not

focusing on the order of where the button goes. The website has to many items in the

vertical menu on the left making it look very cluttered and too many information.

Whether the menu is horizontal or vertical does not impact the way users find their

information. This is because there are many reasons but the main point is that the order

of the menu does not matter. In a study by Alex J DeWitt, November 2010 , “the location

of the items does not have a great impact on how quickly users can find them (at least

for horizontal and vertical website menus containing 6 to 10 items)”.

 Furthermore, the aspect of website layout is important because it represents the

identity of the company. In the aspect of website layout, the company website is too

dated and does not look like it has been updated in a while. Nowadays, it is important to

also place aspect in the layout of the website because it is main identity of the company

website. In the study of Web design: A key factor for the website success, May 2009,

“The appearance of a website, in terms of store aesthetics, has also to be considered

for achieving a successfully website design“. This is important as it is the first

impression that the user will notice when visiting a website.

Finally, the ease of access for the company website is essential for the user to

navigate. The website loading speed is slow because of the large unnecessary

information that is placed through out the website. That is not to say that information is

not important but it should be information that essential and important for the user to

find. “The web site performance depends on a variety of factors

such as content on your pages, browser, geographic location of access, bandwidth,

etc. It is often possible to make the contents of a web page take fewer bytes without

changing the appearance or function of the page. Reducing the number of bytes a

client has to download makes the page load faster. There are many ways to make

websites run faster” Jatinder Manhas, Nov 2013.

 PROPOSED SOLUTIONS

There are many problems faced by the company website. The proposed

solutions should be able to help the company solve the main issues. The first solution

should be to focus on the navigation, make the navigation more streamline and less

cluterred. At is current state, there is too much items in the navigation menu. They

should reduce or consolidate the information so that there is few items and the user

may be able to find the essential information. By either reducing or consolidate the

menu navigation will appear clean and easy to use. This will solve the first problem

facing the website.

Secondly, the problem the website is facing is the website layout is too dated.

The website manager needs to update the looks of the website so that it appears

modern and professional. The main cause for concern is that the aesthetic of the

website may hurt the company reputation and have users or potential customers think

that the company has an old fashion way of thinking and opt out of using or contracting

their services. The website layout needs to be simplified and added sections to it.

Nowadays, most customers are technology savvy and by modernizing the layout they

would keep existing clients and attract new ones.

Moreover, the ease of access in regards to load time of the website needs to be

optimized. The issue facing the website is also the load times. There could be many

reasons why the website is slow. The manager of the website should tak initiative to

optimize website by reducing the bytes of each pages or sections or removing

unnecessary information. This will help make the website faster and have it easy for the

user. The speed of the load will also drive traffic to the website and make the website

easier to use. By reducing load times, the website can load other pages more faster and

can make navigation easier.

RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the web manager applies all of the solution. As stated in

the previous section, it will help the company gain tractions with old and new user. In

this day and age, society has already progress far and have technologies to help. In

regards to web design, there are now multiple ways to make the website more

interesting and more efficient. It should be prudent of the company to follow the times

and make the website more appealing for the user. The load times should also be

reduce so that it is faster and should not be the speed of the internet from the 90s.

REVIEW

In conclusion, the case study focuses on the issues off the website of

industrialpainter.com. The web manager needs to focus on the aspect of analyzing how

the websites needs to appear for the user because of its dated appearance. The

websites needs to focus on how the user can navigate the website more easy and less

cluttered. The issue with the load times should also be the essential for the web

manager priority because by reducing load times it would be easier for the user to

access pages more quickly and efficiently. The company would then be ahead of its

competitors if the focus on all the aspects.
