The topic we were assigned is Literary approach and Polysystem theory in translation
study
We have distributed our presentation into 5 parts
First of all, identify The gap between linguistic and literature
Secondly, we shall dive into the definition of polysystem
The third part will be the primal position of translation
Followed by the fourth part, the secondary position of its, and the contribution of
polysystem theory
Last but not least, the shortcomings of Polysystem theory.

Now we take a look at the first part, the gap between linguistics and literature
Linguistics is the scientific study of language itself, how it’s formed, how it evolves and
how people learn it. It can be divided into different branches, namely, Phonetics and
Phonology, Morphology and Syntax; and Semantics, and each of these areas contributes
to our understanding of how language works
On the other side, Literature is concerned with using language as a form of expression to
tell stories and share messages. Therefore, Literature can reflect life, and simultaneously
create a world that is separated from reality.
In literature, a translation should not be considered as a linguistic attempt but a literary
one. Language has an “energy”. By experiencing a culture, this energy is manifested
through words it gives translation strength and ultimately, meaning: this is what the
translator should translate.
Now let’s take an example to understand the gap between these two definitions
'I am the enemy you killed, my friend' by s Wilfred Owen
In terms of real life, this is a meaningless utterance. the words 'enemy' and 'friend'
contrast each other. Secondly, the speaker is already dead, therefore, he doesn’t have the
ability to speak. However, as a line in Owen's poem, it is very effective and meaningful,
because it brings in another dimension and that is death
To conclusion
Literature, therefore, contains additional dimensions of meaning and aesthetics, which do
not appear in the world of linguistics
And polysytem theory was born to fill that dimensional gap that opened up in the 1970s
between linguistics and literary studies according to Susan Bassnett
Now we will dive deeper into polysystem theory which will be presented by Suong.
