Materials

1. Isoamyl alcohol
2. NaHCO3 25%
3. Glacial acetic acid
4. Saturated NaCl
5. Aquadest

Procedure:

1. A
2. Take 75ml of isoamyl alcohol and 100ml of glacial acetic acid, put into 250ml round bottom
flask.
3. Add 20ml of concentrated sulfuric acid carefully (shaking / rotating flask slowly), and add
into it some boiling stones.
4. Refluxing the mixture for one hour to carry out the esterification process.
5. After completion of the esterification process, do the cooling at room temperature.
6. After chilling, transfer the mixture into a separating funnel, and add 275ml of cold distilled
water. Wash the round bottom flask with 50ml of cold distilled water and put in the washing
water into the separating funnel. Close the separating funnel and shake for several times.
7. Separate the bottom layer (waste) from the upper layer (crude banana oil).
8. Extract the crude banana oil with 125ml of NaHCO3 5% solution with a separating funnel.
Shake the separating funnel slowly to remove CO 2, shake the separating funnel once or
twice, then open the lid to rid the steam. Continue shuffling until all steam is lost. Separate
the bottom layer and repeat the extraction until the bottom layer is alkaline.
9. Extract the upper layer (crude banana oil) with 125ml of distilled water. Add 25ml of
saturated NaCl solution, stirring.
10. Separate the bottom layer (waste) and the upper layer (crude banana oil) carefully.
11. Move the crude banana oil to the erlenmeyer, add 10 grams of anhydrous MgSO 4- , lid and
shake the erlenmeyer slowly.
