You're going to hear a talk about personality. You will hear the talk twice. The first time, just listen. Then I'l ask you
to tell me generolly what the speaker is talking about. Are you ready?
+ Are you open-minded? Talkative? Stable? Our personalities are complex and vibrant things. It comes
down to how we think, feel, and behave.
Nowadays, online personality tests often promise to help us understand ourselves and our relations. They
are even used in job interviews, But are they really effective?
One problem with many personality tests is that the results can change over time. Some questions will get
a different answer from one day to the next, so don’t reveal your true personality.
Another issue with online tests is that they are self-reporting. People are not always honest in their
responses and sometimes try to present a perfect version of themselves.
The biggest problem is the inherent difficulty of dividing all humans into one of 16 or 25 or however many
personality types. We are complex beings who don’t fit into boxes.
In the face of this, 89 of the 100 biggest companies in the USA use personality tests for their staff.
+ One argument for their use here is that they can raise awareness of the fact that people in the workplace
think and behave in different ways, and in this way, help build teamwork, as people get to know each
other.
Itis also true that personality tests can be a useful tool for people trying to reflect on their personalities,
and maybe improve what they consider a weakness,
+ The fact that our personalities can be neatly divided into 16 types is also satisfying to some, who proudly
proclaim their personality type on their social media accounts.
Taking all this into consideration, | think that while there is some value in the self-reflection that
personality tests offer, they are not a very rigorous scientific tool, and we should be careful using them for
anything more than light entertainment.
