ISE Il Test 2 — Task 1 — Long reading Read the following text about a building and answer the 15 questions on the next page. The first skyscraper Paragraph 1 Chicago in the 19 century was growing at an incredible pace. The population tripled every ten years between 1840 and 1880. The Chicagoans lived in wooden buildings, closely packed on the smal city streets. Then 1871 brought a hot and dry summer. A small fire on October 7® consumed a lot of the city’s water and firefighting resources. Then a huge three-day fire the day after destroyed most of the city centre, including 17,500 buildings. The boom of construction that followed obeyed stricter regulations to avoid a repeat of the disaster. Paragraph 2 The new buildings were primarily made of brick or stone (non-flammable) and used radical new steel frames. Large buildings were previously supported by thick masonry walls, which meant there was a limit how tall ‘they could be before they were too heavy to stand up, When asked to design the headquarters for the Home Insurance Company in Chicago, the engineer Wiliam Jenney instead used a steel skeleton to support the walls in his plans. This meant the frame was lighter and could be built higher. It also allowed for more windows, as the walls were not for supporting weight, so could be made of glass. Paragraph 3 Jenney’s building, completed in 1885, was 10 stories high, at 42 metres. It stood on the comer of Adams and LaSalle Street in the central business district of the city. Barely noticeable in a modern metropolis, it was nonetheless unique for its time. What is more, it included many other novel features such as fast elevators and plumbing pipes up to the top floor. Five years after it was completed, another two stories were added, taking its final height to 55 metres. Architects now consider it the world’s earliest skyscraper due to its construction materials and methods, even though it was far from the tallest structure when it was built. Paragraph 4 ‘There is now little doubt that the building was a success — it has served as the blueprint for hundreds more skyscrapers — but at the time, not everyone was convinced. The Chicago city planning committee doubtfully asked Jenney where such a building existed elsewhere in the world. Then, the city council went as far as to close down the construction site for a period while they carried out tests to ensure It wouldn't fall over. Critics pointed out how steel contracts and expands with temperature changes as evidence that it was not stable enough to support a skyscraper. Paragraph 5 All good things must come to an end, and the Home Insurance building did indeed, fall down. But not because of the steel frame. The development of Chicago continued in the early twentieth century and the building ‘was sacrificed to make way for another, even larger skyscraper in 1931, However, its legacy lives on through the so-called “Chicago Schoo!” of architects who came together to work on the Home Insurance building, and went on to design skyscrapers in cities such as New York, San Francisco and even Melbourne. And the end of school was fun! There was loads to do, but the highlight for me was our performance on Thursday. We had rehearsed for a week, and it went down very well. No one forgot their lines, the audience laughed at all the right parts and there were even some gasps at the twist ending. We came second in the popular vote, losing out to the girls in 9B who did a cover version of a Black Eyed Peas song. Then on the last day | took part in every activity | could, although there were so many that | missed out on playing pinball. Everyone had to skip something. Pinball’s not my cup of tea anyway. | tried the climbing wall, but they didn’t have a harness in my size, so | was a bit worried about going too high. Anyway, bring on summer!
