DIVISION V – DOORS, WINDOWS AND GLASS

SECTION 05001

WOOD DOORS AND FRAMES

1.0 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION

A. Furnish, fabricate and install all wood doors, frames and accessories complete as
shown in the drawings and as specified herein.

1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Wood doors shall be products of reputable, nationally known manufacturers


approved by the Architect.

B. Doors shall be manufactured from thoroughly seasoned kiln-dried wood, pressure


preservative treated, of the grades and species as specified with Wolman salts.

1.03 SUBMITTALS

A. Shop drawings of all wood doors and frames shall be submitted to include the
following:

1. Elevations for each type.

2. Details of each type.

3. Location in the building of each item.

4. Typical and special details of construction.

5. Location and installation requirements for hardware.

B. No work shall be started until all shop drawings have been approved by the
Architect.

1.04 PRODUCT DELIVERY AND STORAGE

A. Doors shall not be delivered unduly long before they are to be installed.

B. Doors shall be protected and kept under cover both during transit and at the jobsite.

2.0 PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS

A. Lumber shall be of the grades treated with Wolman salts.

2.02 FABRICATION AND MANUFACTURE

A. Door frames shall be of the designs, sizes and thickness indicated in the schedule.

B. Wood doors shall be of the designs, sizes and thickness as indicated in the
schedule.

1. Hollow core flush doors shall be the ladder type, with the core parts
uniformly spaced to provide sufficient support for strength and durability.

2. Solid core flush doors shall have solid cores of the stile and rail type or the
vertical block type.

3. Flush wood doors shall be fabricated such that the entire core and frame
assembly shall be bonded to the face veneers with approval type, water-
resistant adhesives and cured under controlled head and pressure.
Facings shall be tempered lawanit, waterproofed or marine plywood as
indicated. They shall be reinforced with wood block inserts for locksets,
hinges, door holders, door closers and other hardware as indicated in the
hardware schedule,

4. Flush wood doors with door louvers on wood frames shall be of the types,
sizes and thicknesses indicated in the schedule.

3.0 EXECUTION

3.01 INSPECTION

A. Doors shall be checked for warp and weave and true if necessary.

B. No work shall be started until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.

3.02 PREPARATION

A. Top and bottom edges of all interior and exterior doors shall be given a coat of lead
and oil priming paint or a coat of water-resistant spar varnish after cutting and fitting
and prior to installation in the work.

3.03 INSTALLATION

A. Wood door frames

1. Frames shall be set plumb and true and braced to prevent distortion.

2. Frames on wood-framed walls or partitions shall be secured with finishing


nails or as indicated.

3. In concrete or masonry walls, frame shall be secured by anchor bolts or as


shown in the drawings.

SECTION 05002

ALUMINUM DOORS AND FRAMES

1.0 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION

A. Furnish, fabricate and install all aluminum doors, frames and accessories, complete
as shown in the drawings and as specified herein.

1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Aluminum doors and frames shall be products of reputable, nationally known


manufacturer approved by the Architect.

B. Protection of aluminum.

1. Aluminum surfaces in contact with mortar, concrete, or other masonry materials


shall be given coat of heavy-bodied bituminous paint.

2. When door frames are installed, they shall be protected from damage. Doors
or frames that are damaged prior to completion and acceptance shall be
restored to the original condition, or replaced.

1.03 SUBMITTALS

A. Shop drawings of all aluminum doors and frames shall be submitted to include the
following:

1. Elevations for each type.

2. Details of each type.

3. Locations in the building of each item.

4. Typical and special details of construction.

5. Locations and installation requirements for hardware.

1.04 PRODUCT DELIVERY AND STORAGE

A. Prior to shipment from the factory, finished surfaces of aluminum shall receive a
protective coating or covering. Coating or covering shall not chip, peel, or flake due
to temperature or weather and shall protect against discoloration and surface
damage for transportation, storage, and construction activities. Coating or covering
shall be readily removable without affecting the finish. Covering shall be either
adhesive paper, waterproof tape or strippable plastic. Coating applied to aluminum
shall be sprayed-on coats or clear, water-white, non-yellowing, methacry-late
lacquer to a total minimum thickness of 0.004 inch; maximum thickness 0.006 inch.

B. Materials delivered to the site shall be inspected for damage, unloaded and stored
with a minimum of handling.

C. The storage spaces shall be in dry locations with adequate ventilation, free from
dust or water and shall permit easy access for inspection and handling. Materials
shall be stored neatly on the floor, properly stacked on non-absorptive strips or
wood platform.

2.0 PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS

A. Aluminum shall consist of extruded shapes and sheet material. Extrusions shall
comply with ASTM Alloy 6063-T5 or best commercial standards. Screws, nuts,
washers, rivets and other miscellaneous fastening devices shall be of hard
aluminum or stainless steel.

B. Finish for aluminum door and frame shall be as indicated.

C. Hardware for aluminum doors is specified in Section: BUILDERS’ HARDWARE.


Hardware templates for use in fabrication of aluminum doors and frames shall be
obtained by door manufacturer from hardware supplier.

D. Glazing of aluminum doors is specified in Section: GLASS AND GLAZING. Metal


glazing heads, vinyl inserts and glazing gaskets of securing glass shall be supplied
by the door manufacturer.

E. Anchors shall be of stainless steel or steel with a hot-dipped galvanized finish.

F. Weatherstripping shall be continuous wool pile type silicone treated


weatherstripping or the type recommended by the door manufacturer as approved
by the Architect.

2.02 FABRICATION AND MANUFACTURE

A. Aluminum frames to receive doors, transoms and adjoining sidelights shall be


fabricated of extruded aluminum shape to contours approximately as shown on
drawings. Frames that are to receive fixed glass shall have removable glass stops
and glazing heads. Exposed fastening shall be countersunk stainless steel Philip
head screws spaced not more than 18 inches on centers. Joints in frame members
shall be more than 18 inches on centers. Joints framed members shall be milled to
a hairline watertight fit, reinforced and either welded along concealed lines on
contact or secured mechanically. Shapes shown are minimum. Shapes of
equivalent design, dimensions, profile and function may be submitted. Such
shapes shall be subject to approval of samples by the Architect.

B. Doors shall be fabricated from extruded aluminum hollow seamless tubes or from a
combination of open-shaped members interlocked or welded together. Top and
bottom rail shall be fastened together by means of welding or by ½ inch diameter
cadmium plated tensioned steel tie rods. An adjustable mechanism of jack screws
or other methods shall be provided in the top rail to allow for minor clearance
adjustments, after installation. Extruded aluminum theft-proof snap in glazing or
fixed glazing beads shall be provided on exterior or security side of doors. Glazing
beads shall have vinyl inset glazing gaskets. Glazing beads shall be designed to
receive glass of thickness shown.

C. Doors and frames shall be cut, reinforced, drilled and tapped at the factory to
receive all template hardware.

D. Provide anchors of sizes and shapes as indicated for securing aluminum frames to
adjacent construction. Provide anchors on back of sub-frames. Securely anchor
transom bars at ends and mullions at head and sill.

E. Provide weatherstripping on stiles, rails, and bottom of exterior doors. Weather-
stripping shall be attached to aluminum holders and fitted into slots which are
integral with door or frame stops. Weather-stripping shall be easily replaced without
special tools and at meeting rails of pairs of doors shall be adjustable. Installation
shall allow doors to swing freely and close positively.

F. Where possible, locate welds on unexposed surfaces. Welds on exposed surfaces


shall be carefully selected to produce a uniform texture and color in finished work.
Remove flux and spatter from surfaces immediately after welding. Exposed screws
or bolts will be permitted only at inconspicuous locations, and shall have heads
countersunk. Concealed reinforcements for hardware shall be welded in place as
specified herein.

3.0 EXECUTION

3.01 INSPECTION

A. No installation work shall be started until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. Frames and framing members to receive doors, transoms and adjoining sidelights
be set accurately in position, plumb, square, level and in alignment. Frames shall
be securely anchored to adjacent construction as shown on drawings and in
accordance with manufacturer’s printed instructions. Doors shall be hung exact
with clearances. After erection and glazing, hardware shall be adjusted to operate
properly and doors and frames shall be thoroughly cleaned.

SECTION 05003

METAL WINDOWS / LOUVERS

1.0 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION

A. Furnish, fabricate and install complete all metal windows and louvers and
accessories as shown in the drawings and as specified herein.

B. Unless otherwise indicated, all window frames shall be constructed to withstand a


minimum 244 kg./sq.m. winload with the sashes or blades in closed position.

C. Windows shall be designed for glazing from outside with continuous glazing beads.

1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. All metal windows and louvers shall be products of reputable, nationally known
manufacturers approved by the Architect.

B. Applicable standards and specifications specified in Section: MISCELLANEOUS


STEEL.

1.03 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit shop drawings of all metal windows and louvers for approval.

B. No work shall be started until all shop drawings have been approved by the
Architect.

1.04 PRODUCT DELIVERY AND STORAGE

A. Products shall be protected and kept under cover both during transit and at the
jobsite.

2.0 PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS

A. All materials where applicable in this section shall be as specified in Section:


MISCELLANEOUS STEEL.

B. Jalousie frames shall be extruded aluminum with 5.6 millimeters (7/32 inch) by 10
centimeters (4 inches) glass slates of local manufactured approved by the Architect.

C. Screws shall be approved aluminum alloy 18 X 18 mesh.

2.02 FABRICATION AND MANUFACTURE

A. Metal Louver

1. Metal louver shall be of the fixed type fabricated from galvanized steel sheet to
shapes and sizes indicated.

2. Louver frames and blades shall be heavily zinc-coated steel sheet.

3. The blades shall be gage 14. Blades shall be accurately fitted secured to the
frames. The edges of all louver blades shall be folded or beaded for rigidity.

B. Jalousie Windows.

1. Jalousie windows shall be rotot-operated.

3.0 EXECUTION

3.01 INSPECTION

A. Windows and louvers shall be checked for warp and weave and trued if necessary.

B. No work shall start until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. Windows and louvers shall be installed plumb and square without springing or
forcing and securely anchored to walls.

B. The complete installation shall be waterproofed and weathertight.

SECTION 05004

METAL DOORS

1.0 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION

A. The Contractor shall furnish materials and labor for the fabrication and installation of
hollow metal doors and frames.

1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Reference Specifications.

Steel Carbon, Cold Rolled Sheet, Commercial Quality ASTM A366-72.

B. Hollow metal doors and frames shall be products of reputable, nationally known
manufacturers acceptable to the Architect.

1.03 SUBMITTALS

A. Shop drawing details of fabrication.

1.04 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Door frames and accessories delivered to the site shall be inspected for damage,
unloaded and stored in suitable and accessible spaces with a minimum of handling.

B. During delivery door frames of welded unit construction shall be strapped together
in pairs with heads of one frame inverted for bracing.

C. As an alternate method temporary steel spreaders shall be securely fastened to the


bottom of each frame.

D. Doors and frames shall be stored carefully on platforms under cover.

E. The storage spaces shall be in dry locations with adequate ventilation, free from
dust, or water and shall permit easy access for inspection and handling. Avoid
using non-vented plastic or canvas shelters which create a humidity chamber.

F. If the fiberboard wrapper on the door becomes wet, the carton shall be removed
immediately. Provide a ¼” space between doors to promote air circulation.

2.0 PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS

Steel doors and frames of size, type(s) and design(s) indicated and specified herein be
provided at openings shown on the drawings.

A. Hollow metal doors shall be custom-built to size and detail indicated. Style of doors
shall be flushed as specified herein. Doors shall be hinged type and shall be provided
with frames. Doors and frames shall be prepared to receive the hardware specified
under the Section: BUILDERS’ HARDWARE. Doors provided shall be 1-3/4 inch thick,
unless indicated or specified otherwise.

B. Flush doors shall be constructed of two outer steel sheets not lighter that 16 gage,
welded and finished flush. The outer face sheets shall be reinforced with 24 gage
vertical channels or interlocking zee members. Sound installation fillers of cork
fiberboard, mineral wallboard or asbestos shall be placed full height in spaces
between reinforcing channels. Doors shall have smooth, flush surfaces without any
visible joints or seams or exposed faces or stile edges except around glazed or
louvered panel inserts. Top and bottoms of doors shall have continuous reinforcing
channels welded to face sheets the channels for exterior doors shall be inverted
type, not lighter than 16 gage, constructed to form a weatherseal. Glazed openings
shall be provided were indicated the moulding around glazed openings shall not be
lighter than 20 gage metal.

C. Hollow metal frames shall be formed to size and shape indicated, and shall have full
welded unit or knockdown field assembled type construction at corners and other
joints. Steel frames for doors interior glazed panels shall be provided at locations
shown on drawings.

1. Corner joints of framed for manufacturer’s standard doors shall be welded and
mitered in accordance with the requirements. All contact edges shall be closed
tight. Welds or exposed surfaces shall be dressed flush and smooth and shall
present a neat appearance.

2. Joints for knock-type frames – Corner joints shall be designed for simple field
assembly of header to jamb members by concealed tendon, splice plates, or
other type concealed in interlocking joint that will produce square and rigid
corners and a tight fit. Joints shall be locked in place during erection and
alignment of adjoining members shall be maintained. Provide lock units for all
bolted connections.

D. Anchors and fasteners for frames shall be manufacturer’s standard shapes and
sizes designed to anchor and frames securely to the adjoining construction. Anchor
shall be of steel, zinc coated or painted with rust-inhibitive paint. Floor anchors shall
be not lighter than 18 gage with the exception of jamb anchors for installing door
frames in metal lath and plaster assemblies which shall be a minimum of 16 gage
and shall not extend no more than ¾ inch out of the back of the jamb.

a. Wall anchors. A minimum of three anchors shall be provided for each jamb.
Anchors shall be located opposite the top and bottom hinges and midway
between top and bottom anchors.

1. Anchors for fastening frames to masonry shall be adjustable, shall be


corrugated and perforated and shall extend not less than 8 inches into
masonry.

2. Anchors for fastening frames to wood or metal stud partition shall be


welded or otherwise securely fastened to wood studs with nails, to closed
steel studs with sheet.

3. Anchors for fastening frames to previously placed concrete or masonry or


to rough bucks shall be secured to existing construction with expansion
bolts. Frames shall be fastened securely to anchor on rough bucks.

4. Anchors for fastening frames in solid plaster partitions shall be securely


solidly to back of frames and shall receive the lath. Adjustable top strut
anchors shall be provided on each side of frame for fastening to the
structural members or ceiling construction above. The size and type of
strut anchors shall be as recommended by the frame manufacturer.

b. Floor anchors – Floor anchors shall be provided at the bottom of each jamb
member. Anchors shall be (fixed) (adjustable) and drilled for 3/8 inch diameter
anchor bolts. (Where floor fill occurs, the bottom of frames shall terminate at the
indicated finished floor levels and be supported by adjustable extension clips
resting on, and anchored to the structural slab.)

c. Fasteners for trim applied to rough bucks shall be of concealed type.

3.0 EXECUTION

3.01 INSTALLATION

Hollow metal doors and frames shall be reinforced, drilled and tapped to receive finish
hardware.

a. Shop finish on steel.

1. Primed finish for metal surfaces. All metal doors and frames shall be
cleaned thoroughly, phosphate treated to assure maximum paint
adherence, and given a factory dip spray coat or rust inhibitive paint. The
prime coat of paint shall be a type specially developed for materials
treated by phosphate and adopted to application by dipping or spraying.

2. Construction and workmanship. Finished doors shall be strong and rigid,


neat in appearance, free from defects, waves, scratches, cuts, dirts,
ridges, holes, warp or buckles. Moulded members shall be clean cut
straight and true with joints capped or mitered well formed and in true
alignment. Exposed welded and soldered joints shall be dressed smooth.
Door frame sections shall be designed for use with the wall construction
indicated. Finished frames shall be strong and rigid. Moulded members
shall be clean out, straight and true. Corner joints shall be well formed
and in true alignment. Fastening shall be concealed where practicable.
Finish painting shall be as specified in Section: FIELD PAINTING. Paint
application shall be spraying equipment.

SECTION 05005
CAULKING AND SEALANT

1.0 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION

A. This section includes caulking, sealing and accessories, complete.

B. Caulking shall be provided in all open joints exposed to the weather, as indicated or
specified, and in all areas normally requiring sealing with caulking of sealant
material to provide watertight and weather-tight construction.

1.02 SUBMITTALS

A. Before caulking work is started, a sample opening of each type of joint shall be
caulked where indicate. The samples shall show the materials, workmanship,
bond, and color caulking material as specified or selected for the work. The
materials, workmanship, bond and color of caulking work throughout the project
shall match that of the approved sample joint.

1.03 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Materials shall be delivered to the jobsite in the manufacturer’s original containers,


with the brands, date of manufacture and name clearly marked thereof. All
materials shall be carefully handled and stored to prevent inclusion of foreign
materials. Or subjection to temperature exceeding ninety degrees Fahrenheit (90F).
Caulking compound or components more than six months old shall not be used.
Color of caulking compound shall be gray or aluminum or as directed by the
Architect.

2.0 PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS

A. Caulking compound for joints in wood, masonry, and metal; between wood and
masonry, masonry and steel frames, and wood and metal, shall be one-part
polysulfide base synthetic rubber, “Pecora Synthacalk GC-9” as distributed by
“Philippine Paint Manufacturers, Inc.

B. Glazing compound for glazing windows shall be two-part polysulfide base synthetic
rubber “Pecora Synthacalk GC5”.

3.0 EXECUTION

3.01 INSPECTION

A. Make sure surfaces to which sheet metal are to be applied are thoroughly clean and
dry and free from any defect hat may affect the application.

B. Joint sealing materials shall be provided to seal all joints in and around sealing strips
at bolt holes before inserting fasteners, for all flashing and elsewhere as necessary
to assure watertight construction.

C. Sheet metal flashing shall be secured to concrete as shown or as approved.

D. Flashing shall be provided as indicated and where necessary to make the work
water-tight. Flashing shall not be bent into sharp angles, but shall be worked so as
large a radius as possible. Exposed edges of counterflashing shall be folded 1.25
centimeters. End laps in counter flashing shall not be less than 7.60 cm. and shall
be made watertight with plastic cements.
