1. Do some research and locate definitions of IT
Governance. Following this, analyse the various
definitions you have found to create a new and
concise definition for IT governance.
IT Governance is one or multiple processes that monitors and
controls key information technology capability decisions and
aligns business strategies and goals with IT services to ensure the
use of information technology is efficient and effective in order to
get positive results. In a precise description IT Governance is a
formal way to align IT and business strategy.

2. Explain the relationship between IT governance

and corporate governance.
Corporate governance is a system of rules, practices and processes
that are used by a corporation to direct and control its actions. IT
governance is a process that fits firmly under the umbrella of
corporate governance and an element of corporate governance,
which is its own collection of processes that are designed to keep the
entire corporation efficient and effective.
According to the “The Impact of the Application of IT Governance
According to (COBIT 5) Framework in Reduce Cloud Computing Risks”
written by Weill & Ross, 2004, the institute for Information
Technology Governance has noted that IT governance is a
complementary part of corporate governance and consists of
leadership, organizational structure and processes that emphasize
technology support in the organization and ensure the achievements
of the organization’s strategy and objectives.

3. List and explain the six principles of EGIT
according to the ISO 38500 standard.
 Responsibility – Establish responsibilities.
Individuals and groups within the organization understand and
accept their responsibilities in respect of both supply of, and
demand for IT. Those with responsibility for actions also have
the authority to perform those actions.

 Strategy – Plan to best support the organization.

The organization’s business strategy takes into account the
current and future capabilities of IT; the plans for the use of IT
satisfy the current and on-going needs of an organization’s
business strategy.

 Acquisition – Make acquisitions for valid reasons.

IT acquisitions are made for valid reasons, on the basis of
appropriate and on-going analysis, with clear and transparent
decision making.

 Performance – Ensure necessary levels of performance.

IT is fit for purpose in supporting the organization, providing
the services and service quality required to meet current and
future business requirements.

 Conformance – Ensure conformance with rules.

The use of IT complies with all mandatory legislation and
regulations. Policies and practices are clearly defined,
implemented and enforced.

 Human Behaviour – Ensure respect for human factors.

IT policies, practices and decisions demonstrate respect for
Human Behaviour, including the current and evolving needs of
all the ‘people in the process’.

4. In terms of EGIT, what is meant by “alignment

between the business and IT”?
The concept of aligning IT and business is rooted in the longstanding
reality that the IT industry and the business sector of an organization
were unable to be transparent and coherent with each other.
Achieving true IT-Business alignment requires strategy and that
strategy should be an iterative process and include different
practices: Changing your thinking, changing your doing; View IT as an
instrument for business transformation; Make the customer
experience a priority; Use a single language; Be equally transparent
to all departments; Rotate IT and business employees to encourage
understanding; Create an alignment. When IT and business are
aligned, digital transformation flows easily.
