AROUND THE PATTERN

THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF TRIPLE TREE AERODROME MAY 2023

WELCOME TO THE 41st ANNUAL JOE NALL WEEK!

Triple Tree Aerodrome is proud to welcome the
thousands of pilots, visitors, and volunteers that will be
attending the 41st Annual Joe Nall Week at Triple Tree
Aerodrome! This history-rich event was started in 1982 –
even predating ‘Triple Tree’ itself! Founded by Pat
Hartness and Joe Nall nearly half a century ago, this radio
control fly-in has become a staple in the international
scale-flying community!

This year’s Joe Nall Week will feature flight demos,

industry-leading speakers from around the country, RC
combat battles, dozens of your favorite vendors, and countless opportunities for the fun and fellowship
that Joe Nall Week has come to offer. Of course, we’ll see the Joe Nall and Bob Smith awarded this year
to two individuals, respectively, that embody the spirit of radio control and have best mastered the
hobby.

Joe Nall Week is an action-packed event that cannot be missed! In addition to the celebration of radio
control, Joe Nall Week celebrates our friends and family around us, and appreciates the relationships
we’ve developed over the decades! Triple Tree will be curating meals, speakers, and gatherings
throughout the week to catch up with a few familiar faces, as well as meet some new ones, too!

As always, Triple Tree Aerodrome (SC00) will be closed to

full-scale flight operations all week, as radio control flight
happens 24 hours a day! Attendees are encouraged to check
out Triple Tree’s expansive and dynamic listing of events
happening at this year’s Joe Nall Week at
www.tta.aero/aviation-events/joe-nall. Additional updates
can also be found at Triple Tree Aerodrome’s official
Facebook page at www.facebook.com/tripletreeaero.

VOLUNTEERING AT TRIPLE TREE
BY DEB ELLIS, TRIPLE TREE VOLUNTEER
As a volunteer of Triple Tree, I have the privilege of
seeing our guests when they arrive and take that first
step out of their plane after the excitement of landing
on a lush, seven-thousand foot Bermuda grass strip.
The grin on their faces is equally infectious to the
volunteers as we watch them survey the surrounding
beauty - even before they step off the wing. Soon after
arrival, many guests will see Pat Hartness and ‘Uncle
John’ Hartness riding golf carts in impeccably clean-
pressed shirts and matching mischievous grins. They
make everything our guests see look easy.

If you want to see how the magic of Triple Tree is created, come out and volunteer a few weeks before an
event. The beauty we enjoy is because of a 24/7 labor of love which is inspirational to see in action. I
have been witness to seeing Uncle John, who was probably 98 at the time, working - and when I say
working, I mean using huge 2-3 foot long iron wrenches on some of the largest mowers that Triple Tree
operates. And yes, he mowed grass too. I have also observed Pat Hartness covered in red clay, heaving 50
pounds of grass seed into a hopper so that we all may enjoy the beautiful, manicured lawns. Pat’s idea of
taking it easy is when he is ‘riding’ on bulldozers, backhoes, track
loaders, skid steers, lawnmowers, and other construction
equipment. For some Triple Tree events, Pat even creates
majestic rustic table decorations from the foliage on the
property. This dream put in action has kept Uncle John and Pat
young. There isn’t much either of them can’t do, and yet, they
both remain extremely humble.

If you’d like to be inspired, come on out and volunteer with us at

one of our many events. If you want full inspiration, and to
maybe feel 10 to 60 years younger, come out and volunteer a
few weeks before the event! Triple Tree really is the home of
fun, fellowship, and hospitality. We hope to see you soon! -D.E.
