Teaching Self-Evaluation

1. Describe the setting – when, where, subject, grade-level, etc…

I delivered my lesson at Cal poly Pomona in building 9, room 283. I was one of the first to go up

and teach, at around 1pm. I taught on the subject of television's impact on public opinion of U.S.

involvement in Vietnam. The target audience was eleventh grade students in a history of the

United States class.

2. What apprehensions or challenges did you confront before delivering the lesson?

Coming up with the lecture material was challenging because I wanted to talk about the Vietnam

war, but when I pitched the topic to the professor, he said that the topic was too broad. I had to

pick a specific sub topic within the Vietnam War. I decided to choose television's impact on

public opinion of the Vietnam War. I also feel that I stressed too much about what content to

include. I feel that if I had included all that I wanted to, the lecture portion would have been way

too long, and I would have included too many videos.

3. What in the lesson worked well?

According to the feedback from Peers as well as my professor, one of the things that worked well

was the fact that the lesson was organized. According to the feedback, all of the structured

portions that had to be in the lesson were there and in order. Agenda was presented at the

beginning of the lesson which gave an outline for the rest of the lesson. The video clip I included

at the beginning was an effective springboard for the rest of the lesson.

4. Where is there room in the lesson for improvement?

There was room for improvement. More questions could have been asked at the beginning of the

lesson after the first video. The learning objectives could have been framed in a way that makes

the objectives measurable, instead of objectives that are immeasurable.

5. What feedback did you find most insightful/helpful?

The feedback I received was very helpful. Less text could have been on each of the slides, as

some of the slides were very text heavy. I could have waited for more answers to my questions

throughout the lesson. Our questions were very straightforward and didn't really require too

much thinking to answer. We should have tried to incorporate more thinking questions overall.

6. Overall, how did you feel about the lesson? Did it accomplish what you set out to do?

I feel for the first lesson I have ever planned, I am very happy about how the lesson turned out. I

wasn't afraid to publicly speak, and the idea I wanted to get across was accepted through the

classes answering the essential question. I set out to explain how public opinion on U.S.

involvement in Vietnam changed after the influence of television, and the students were able to

answer the essential question of the day, and understand the material.
