Lesson 1: What Is Art to Me? Understanding How Art Can Meet Some Human Needs
Activity 1:
Visit a local art and culture center. It may be a pottery-making place, a local art gallery,
school exhibit, a cultural event, a museum, or a local arts and crafts store. Observe what is
happening. Observe processes that the artists or craftsmen are involved in. If not applicable,
simply reflect on your experience of the space. Take note of the guide Questions below as you
conduct your visit.
Analysis:
Answer the following question:
a. What did you see? Enumerate 5-10 things that were most notable in the place. Describe them
briefly

Vases Plates

Ceramic materials Paso (Pot)

Clay Lamps

Bowls Pitchers

Cups Plant Pots

b. Describe your visit: How did it awaken your senses? Did you feel relaxed, excited, curious, or
intrigued?
- When I visited a pottery place, I was fascinated. I was really amazed with the different arts that
they have made. I was curious on how did they made it and I felt comfortable watching the
environment of the pottery place.

c. Why is this industry of making art or other cultural materials in your place? When did they
start? Why’d they do it and keep at it? (You may modify and fit these questions to your chosen
venue.)
- This industry of pottery making was in our place because it was passed to the owner from his
grandfather. In 1993, the owner’s grandfather started the pottery place. His father was fifteen
years old and became the left hand of his grandfather in making these pottery arts. The owner’s
father died in 2020 due to COVID-19, and he decided to take over the pottery business. Amidst
the circumstances, he was thankful that his father taught him how to produce pottery arts. He
said that pottery also helped him cope after his father’s death. He learned how to express himself
through pottery making, which also helped him to have financial support as his pottery business
is making a stable income.
