Test Procedure for Platelet content

(Ref:AARL)

Scope

This is the procedure for testing Platelet content in activated carbon.

Instruments / Equipments

 Ro tap

Procedure
 Blend the sample with Riffle Type Sample Splitter and oven dry the
sample at 1500C for 1 hour. (1-3 hour is normally sufficient)

 Assemble the screen assembly from top to bottom in the following order.
i. Screen cover
ii. Platelets screen
iii. Fines Screen
iv. Bottom Receiver Pan

 Weigh the dried carbon 50 gm (± 0.1) & transfer to the Platelet screen.
Record this weight as the original sample weight.
 Install the screen assembly to the Ro tap.

 Run the Ro tap for 15 minutes ± 10 seconds or until no further carbon is


seen to pass through the platelet’s screen.

 Remove the screen assembly from Ro tap & weigh each mesh carefully.

Calculation:

Platelet Content, wt. % = X 100


Where,
A=the weight of the carbon retained on the Fines screen, grams
B=the weight of carbon passing through the Fines screen, grams
C=the weight of Original carbon sample, grams

Note: the sum of weights retained on the platelets screen and fines
screen, and passing through the fines screen must be within ± 1.0 grams
of the original carbon sample weight.
