2.3 Characteristics of Feedback

Role of feedback is to make the communication effective and successful. Only an effective
feedback can do this. An effective feedback has the following characteristics
() Intention. The intention of the feedback should ensure that communication becomes
successful if the message is not received correctly. Feedback is the
way to report this to
the sender.

(i) Specific. The feedback should not be vague and should be conveyed with clarity.
ii) Fair and Non-judgmental. Useful feedback does not pass judgement on the message;it
merely expresses if the message is received in the right form.
(T0) Timeliness. Effective feedback is the one that intimated the sender about the message in
time,eg, in in-person communication, a prompt comment and reply will be useful.
Similarly, in written communication, the feedback is not delayed. Delay kills the
efectiveness of the feedback and in turm destroys the effectiveness of the communication.
() sefulness. Effective feedback is the one that aims to improve the overall communication.
(0) Clarity. The feedback must be clear in its form and should be in an understand.able
format.

2.4 Types of Feedback

Feedback can be in various forms and of various types. Let discuss different
3p us types
feedbackS used in communication.

1. Formal and Intormal Feedback

A Formal Feedback follows a preset format or structure using which the receiver frames
feedback and sends it. Formal feedback covers many predefined points and has a specinc
blueprint. The receiver frames the feedback as per this blueprint and sends it. Formal feedback
takes times to construct and hence, is not instant.
Informal Feedback, on the other hand, is spontaneously framed and does not stick to a
M Specific structure such as instantcomments by the listener or audience. It does not take time to
construct as it is instantly conveyed.

Examples:
Informal feedback: 1. "Good job! Congratulations!"
2. "Sorry"

Formal feedback: 1. "Congratulations on scoring A+ in your final test performance. You

are promoted to your next class"

2. "Please accept my apologies.

2. Descriptive and Non-descriptive Feedback

A Non-Descriptive Feedback provides some specific information but does not give detailed
with
descriptions. The feedback conveys meaningful specific response but does not come

descriptive analysis or suggestions.

A Descriptive Feedback, on the contrary, provides meaningful information in a detailed,
expressive manner that als0 contains some analysis or suggestions etc.

Examples
Non-Descriptive feedback
1. I only liked your 2nd paragraph. Others need improvement."
2. "In your article, conclusion needs rework."

Descriptive feedback:
1. "All paragraphs should cover basically one idea. Only one paragraph was as per this
covered ideas and the information was also not
specification, other paragraphs multiple
cohesively linked."

2. "In your article, the conclusion did not reiterate your observation and did not support the
evidences your article talks about. You need to rewrite the conclusion part keeping these

things in mind."

3. Specific and Non-specific Feed back
