1.

Participants
In order to have enough number of participants, Tthere are 19
participantsstudents including … female and … male students between
19 to 22 years old agreed to cooperate with the researcherparticipate in
this research. During the interview, most of them choose to remain
anonymous. Participants are second-year English majored students at
Thuyloi University. Their proficiency in English level was is intermediate
level. And their native language was Vietnamese. They are learning
Chinese as a foreign language at school,. It is a mandatory compulsory
subject. so Tthey can have a properdeep understanding of the current
Chinese foreign language teaching and learning at Thuyloi University.

2. Instrument
The study usesadopted semi-structured interviews in which main
questions were developed on the basis of research questions, including :
1. Why do you choose to study English major? , 2. Why do you choose to
learn Chinese as a foreign langugage at the university? 3. What are
challenges you encouter when you learn two foreign languages at the
university? , nd 4. How can you learn these two languages well? as its
main source of data: 19 students majoring in English from Thuy Loi
University were interviewed. Semi-structured interview – one of the most
widely used strategies in research on student cognition was chosen as it is
a verbal commentary tool for students to verbalize their views about their
major. The interview questions were suggested by the foreign language
teachers of Thuy Loi University and translated into Vietnamese so that
the interviewees could easily understand and the interview also used
Vietnamese. All interview questions were translated in Vietnamese
adopting back-translation methods (see more in Behr, 2017; Sousa & Rojjanasrirat,
2011). The interview questions were reviewed by two English teachers of Department
of English Language and Linguistics who have relevant experiences in doing
qualitative research and teaching English. The final Vietnamese version of interview
was used so that participants could fully understand all the questions.

3. Data collection and analysis


A total of 19 students were chosen for in-depth interviews. The 20-
minute in-person interview focused on the University of Water
Resources' second-year English language students' challenges instruggles
and obstacles with learning two languages as a prevalent theme. To
ensure that the data would be retained, the interviews were carefully
documented. The interviews were done in Vietnamese, the participants'
native language, to enable them to freely express their thoughts and ideas
and maintain the validity and trustworthiness of the research. shy. Experts
translated and commented on each interview into English. Open-ended
questions were utilized in the interviews, which were guided discussions.
The fact that there were no "right" or "wrong" answers was also made
clear to the participants.Data were collected carefully and manually coded
to generate themes and subthemes in relation with the research questions.
In order to make sure confidentiality, respondents’ names were coded
into SVs from SV1 to SV19.
