Grading System
 One of the most important function of a classroom teacher is to assign grades. It is very
important for a classroom teacher to discuss to the students and parents the types of
grading system they will utilize in the beginning of the term or the school year.
 Grades offer a snapshot of student success on tasks, outcomes, and tests. Grades
symbolizes the level of accomplishment of a specific tasks and communicate to you
(teacher) and the student whether or not the student has met the teaching objectives set
at a start of a reporting period. (Frisbie and Waltman, 1992)

What is Grading Systems?

 In education, grading is a method used by teachers to assess the performance and
learning of each student. It is also the process of applying standardized measurements
for varying levels of achievements in a course. Grading may be done using letter grades,
percentages, or even just a pass/fail system. Exercises including writing assignments,
lab work, projects, reports, and tests can all be graded.
 It is the traditional method of measuring whether or not students are participating
successfully in their classroom experience and whether or not they are learning. Letter
or number grades are easy to add up and record, and a teacher can quickly get a sense of
a student’s success or failure by scanning that student’s grades.

Percentage Grading
 Using a percentage scale (percent of 100), usually based on percent correct on exams
and/or percent of points earned on assignments.

Advantages of Percent Grading

 Allows for maximum discriminators in evaluation of students achievement and
performance
 Maximizes the variation among the students making it easier to choose students for
honors or representative for special programs

Disadvantages of Percent Grading

 Requires a great deal of abstraction
 Interpretation of meaning of a percentage grade “extremely difficult”
 Because of a large number of grade categories, it is less reliable and more subjective.
