Cookies Final Project Writeup

Project Description:
Evangeline has decided to start a business selling two bakery items, brownies, and
old-fashioned donuts. Each brownie batch makes 6 brownies and each batch of old-fashioned
makes 10 donuts. One brownie costs $0.90 to make and sells for $3. One donut costs $0.22 to
make and sells for $1. With her constraints of time, space, and materials — what is the best
combination of baked goods Evangeline should make to maximize her profit?

Evangeline's Constraints:

Time:
Evangeline has a total of 30 hrs of prep time.
The brownies take 0.5 hrs to make 1 batch
The old fashions take 1 hr to make 1 batch

Storage space:
Evangeline only has room to store 320 items. This means that any combo of
brownies and donuts cannot exceed 320.
The Brownie batch makes 6 items
The Donut batch makes 10 items.

Materials:
Both recipes use flour but Evangeline only has 70 cups of flour (35 lbs) available
to use.
A batch of brownies uses 0.75 cups of flour.
A batch of donuts uses 2 cups of flour.

Pricing:
Cost:
One brownie costs $0.90 to make
One donut costs $0.22 to make
Sell price with a 300% markup:
One brownie sells for $3.60
One donut sells for $0.88

Solution:
Step 1: Organize your Information in a table

Constraints Brownies Donuts Total

Time 0.5 hours 1 hour 30 hours

Space 6 items 10 items 320 items

Materials .75 cups 2 cups 70 cups

Step 2: Write your constraints as inequalities -b is brownies and d is donuts

Time: 0. 5𝑏 + 𝑑 ≤ 30
Space: 6𝑏 + 10𝑑 ≤ 320
Materials: 0. 75𝑏 + 2𝑑 ≤ 70

Step 3: Write your profit equation

Profit = 2.7b + 0.66d

Step 4: Graph your feasible region (paste screenshot)

Variables:
b=x
d=y
Hayden Bicknell

Step 5: Test your best solutions and find max profit

In the feasible region the number it shows is the batches you can make.
For example, when you see (0,30) it doesn’t mean 30 donuts but instead, 30
batches, and each batch makes 10 donuts so it would be 300 donuts. In the table, I
will be writing the number of items.

Number of brownies Number of donuts Profit made

0 300 (30*10) $198

120 (20*6) 200(20*10) $456

318 (53*6) 0 $858.60

The max profit Evangeline can make is $858.60. She can make this by making 318
brownies which are 53 batches.

Project Reflection:
This project showed me how simple real-world math can be. Before, I
thought that any math in this world I would do would be overly complicated
and I would never know how to solve it. This problem had such simple math
that made it easy to digest. As you can see earlier the only math was just some
inequalities, addition, and multiplication with a little bit of logistics. This type of
problem showed me that doing math in the real world isn’t as scary as it needs to
be and by using mathematical tools such as Desmos it can become even easier.
