Abstract

ABSTRACT

The present study was aimed to a literature review on natural and synthetic polymer used in
pharmaceutical dosage forms. The present study in based on the intensive filed of the area during
the period of 1999 to 2022. The data was collected from online journals, research papers and
books all of which were published in different search engine website such as Google, Google
Scholor, Pubmed, Science Direct, Research gate and other online collections were utilized in this
review to obtain information. The use of polymers in the medical field is not a novelty ‐natural
polymers have been used as components of herbal remedies for centuries. When it comes to
synthetic polymers however the situation is very different. Because polymer science is a
relatively recent area of research synthetic water‐soluble polymers as macromolecular drugs or
as part of drug delivery systems related to inoculation can be considered a modern achievement.
The first polymer drug conjugates appeared around 1955, being mescaline N vinylpyrolidine
conjugate one of the first. Natural polymers are most commonly used as excipients, because of
their relative abundance, nontoxic, low cost, and biodegrable and ecofriendly profiles. Natural
polymer can be used to formulate dosage forms where the drug is designed to release a
predeteremined rate. They can be widely used in pharmaceutical dosage forms as binders, matrix
formers or drug release modifiers, film coating formers, thickeners or viscosity enhancers,
stabilizers, disintegrants, solubilisers, emulsifiers, suspending agents, gelling agents and
bioadhesives. Some synthetic polymers are also used as pharmaceutical excipients like-
nanocellulose, cellulose derivatives; synthetic polymers.
