Lesson 21
Local and Oral History
Definition

study of the people, places, and events of a particular

geographic area

study of history in a local context, often concentrating on

events that affected a local community
Local History

The local history is as important as far as society is concern.

John Larkin once said that local history is the building blocks
of our national histories.
Local history along with oral history are basic to
autonomy

Autonomy implies an exercise of freedom with limited

control or influence from the national government
It provides more room for local initiatives to develop and for
local potentials to progress
More importantly it encourages creative and innovative
responses to development with people with special talents
and potentials
Definition

Oral history is a method of conducting historical research

through recorded interviews between a narrator with
personal experience of historically significant events and a
well-informed interviewer, with the goal of adding to the
historical record.
Definition

 Oral history as a firsthand reminisce of a particular

historical event through the intervention of the historian.
(Grele, 1976)

Oral history is a relatively new technique in historiography;

it is NOT a branch of history

Differs from journalistic or specific historical interviews

since the scope would be broad for future use.
Promotion of Local and Oral History

Local museum
Festival ( region, province, city)
Academe
