Patterns of

Development
EXEMPLIFICATION
Exemplification is a common and
effective way to show or explain an idea
or point (e.g., observation, opinion, belief).
In this pattern of development, the writer
explains the main idea by giving an
extended example or a series of detailed
examples.
GUIDELINES IN EXEMPLIFICATION
WRITING
1. State first the topic sentence.
It has been over a hundred years since the
Philippines was freed from colonization by
countries, but Filipinos still suffer from colonial
mentality. It is something which many can’t get
of, and it is and has been destroying lives since
GUIDELINES IN EXEMPLIFICATION
WRITING
2. Support the topic sentence with examples.
For instance, colonial mentality makes the Filipino
people sick physically, emotionally, and
psychologically. For one, because of the obsession
to have fair skin, many want to undergo skin
bleaching, which can become life-threatening if not
done properly. In fact, many have been reported to
have experienced skin burns because of bleaching.
GUIDELINES IN EXEMPLIFICATION
WRITING
3. Put a conclusion.
You see, the colonial mentality is one
practice that Filipino people should let
go of. It will be a long and tedious
process, but surely, it will be worth the
effort.
GUIDELINES IN EXEMPLIFICATION
WRITING
4. Use transition words.
● For instance, colonial mentality makes
the Filipino people sick physically,
emotionally, and psychologically.
● Another consequence of colonial
mentality is bullying.
● Lastly, the colonial mentality kills the
Filipino people’s patriotism.
GUIDELINES IN EXEMPLIFICATION
WRITING
5.Use an outline or graphic organizer.

learn how to let it go.
CLASSIFICATION
Classification refers to the
sorting or arrangement of subjects
(e.g., persons, places, things,
ideas) into groups or categories
according to their common or
shared characteristics.
GUIDELINES IN CLASSIFICATION
WRITING
1. State first the topic sentence.
•All of us have different kinds of friends.
Each friend has his or her unique
personality, which distinguishes one
friend from another.
GUIDELINES IN CLASSIFICATION
WRITING
2. Support the topic sentence with examples.
• First, we all have that friend who acts like a Love Guru.
This kind of friend would give you love advice as if he or
she has experienced everything about love. The funny
thing about this kind of friend is that most often than not,
he or she, in fact, has never been in a relationship before.
Everything he or she tells you about love is actually from
the movies he or she watched.
GUIDELINES IN CLASSIFICATION
WRITING
• The second kind of friend we all have is the K-POP
maniac. This kind of friend knows every single K-POP
group there is. If you visit his or her room, you’ll see it
covered with posters of different K-POP groups. Most of
all, this kind of friend will speak with you, not in English or
Filipino, but in Korean. That is how much this kind of
friend loves K-POP.
GUIDELINES IN CLASSIFICATION
WRITING
•The third kind of friend we all have is the Geek. This
kind of friend can talk about science and technology
the whole day until your eardrums and nostrils bleed.
He or she always gets perfect scores on exams and
quizzes. Isn’t that cool? If you are lucky, that geeky
friend of yours will give free tutorials. You don’t just
have a friend, but also a tutor.
GUIDELINES IN CLASSIFICATION
WRITING
•Lastly, we all have that friend who is silent.
This kind of friend will make you question
your life because of how quiet he or she is.
But having a silent friend is not bad at all. This
kind of friend will remind you that sometimes
it is better to be quiet. The less you talk, the
less you get the chance to make trouble.
GUIDELINES IN CLASSIFICATION
WRITING
3. Put a conclusion.
•There are still different kinds of friends that
exist, but no matter how different they are, we
are connected to them in one way or another.
GUIDELINES IN CLASSIFICATION
WRITING
4. Use transition words.
● First, we all have that friend who acts like a Love Guru.

English or Filipino, but in Korean. That is how much this
kind of friend loves K-POP.
