Interview Questions
- Can you tell when you and an athlete are not getting along and what do you do in this
situation?
- Yes I can usually tell pretty quickly if something is off with any athlete that I work
with. I rarely ever argue with athletes because I don’t think it’s beneficial. If I
notice that they are upset, quiet, or frustrated I’ll give them some space and then
when I have the opportunity to pull them aside or speak with them one on one I’ll
check in and see how they are doing or ask what’s going on. Everyone has tough
days and I try to be understanding and support them.

- Why do you coach?

- I coach for a few different reasons. I was obsessed with sports growing up, and I
always wanted to be great. I was decent but definitely nothing incredible. I
studied the game, knew how to work hard, and was always fascinated with
development, so this naturally led me down the coaching path. I started coaching
when I was 16 and now at the age of 26 I couldn’t be happier with where my
coaching career is at. I get to coach everyday and I love it. In addition, working
with younger people is something I have always enjoyed. Their willingness to
learn is special. Plus, when I was younger I remember how much my role
models, specifically coaches, helped guide me and I hope to provide all the
athletes I work with the same level of support and guidance.

- Do you pick favorites when you coach or do you try to treat everyone equally?
- I don’t pick favorites when I coach. I do my best to treat all athletes equally and
give them my very best each day. That being said, there are certainly some
athletes that I’ve had the privilege of working with for many years both in the
pool and in the gym. With those athletes, we’ve spent so much time together over
the years and I have watched them go from middle school all the way to college
so there’s definitely a relationship built that looks different than an athlete who
I’ve worked with for a couple weeks or months.

- Tell me about your favorite and least favorite coach?

- It’s honestly very difficult for me to pick just one “best coach,” because 3-4 come
to mind. They all had a few things in common. They all did a great job of
coaching me in sport and life. Their lessons were larger than the game itself, and
many of the things they taught me I carry with me to this day. For example, they
taught me the importance of being consistent, being a great teammate, stepping up
in tough times, representing myself and my family to the best of my ability, and
the power of believing in someone. My best coaches all believed in me more than
I did, and that helped shape me into the coach I am today.

- Do you model yourself, or change the way you coach based on these coaches?
- The worst coaches I had were also quite valuable in my opinion. The bad helped
me appreciate the good and they also helped me realize what I value in a coach.
I remember one coach that I had really making me feel as if I wasn’t good
enough for him. It was frustrating and it definitely lit a fire under me. It had
nothing to do with my level of play, he just didn’t like that I decided not to play
division 1 water polo. I’ve thought about him a lot over the years, and I made a
promise to myself that I’d never treat an athlete poorly or make them feel crappy
simply because I don’t agree with them.
