Bram Stoker

Bram Stoker (1847 – 1912) was born in Dublin to a middle-class family. After graduating from Trinity College,
where he took honors in science, he entered the Irish Civil Service. But his interest in theatre led him to
undertake the role of drama reviewer for a local paper; this in turn led to short-story writing.

Stoker’s most famous work is the great vampire novel Dracula. Since its first publication in 1897, the book has
never been out of print and has been adapted films, plays, and even musicals. Stoker was never able to match
the success of Dracula with his other novels. However, Stoker’s shorter fiction, such as ‘The Judge’s House’, is
still very effective.
