If you are familiar with professional cycling, you are well aware I am not a man of too

many words. Yet, for special people in your life you do make special exceptions.

Lora wrote this book in probably the most intense era of our lives, when, besides
everything else, we were still learning how to function as a family.

When we met more than 10 years ago I was still a ski jumper. The way our paths crossed
is a funny story, but let me just put it this way - all that happened while going to university ...

Coincidence? There is a lot that we could refer to as coincidence in cycling, just as much as
there is in life. Sometimes things just happen because that’s the way the life has to unfold.

Since then, we have ridden and covered a lot of paths together, although it was not always
easy, leaving the »old life« and her own ambitions behind. Decisions, hard decisions, just
finishing her master’s degree with countless doors wide open, she didn’t even think for a second
when I asked her to risk it all and move with me to Spain for a while so I could ride a bike.

The book is unique by its composition and the information it contains. You cannot
compare it to something written by journalists, writers, as it is written by the person
who knows me best. Without filters and embellishments, it is written just the way things
are. It’s also written by the person who has witnessed my sports path from the closest
perspective – the book reveals our wins, falls and sacrifices.

The way Lora explains to the reader the »regulations« and some kind of »rules« of how
to follow a bike race, it is her truth. There are bound to be many who see it differently,
but if you are just getting ready to step into the world of cycling, then you will likely find
this kind of introduction rather interesting and fun. I would be lying if I said I wouldn’t
put some things differently, but then it wouldn’t be her book.

Even I would like to be in our camper when it follows the races; I find the other perspective
of how the race is seen so exciting. I don’t have a clue when the roads close, where you find
water for the camper, how to elbow with other fans to find your space at the road, nor how it is
Paris - Nice 2021 to carry around a just over two months old crying baby through the most remote hills of Spain.

See you on the road.

When they finally pile up from all over the world three days before the
race, the real ceremony begins. Before such a big race as the Vuelta,
they’ll all go through anti-doping control. They’ll shoot a few short videos
and some photos for the organizers and mingle with fans, who are willing
to wait for them for hours.

Then they’ll train – training stays on the roster, of course. If the race starts
with a shorter stage, they’ll just check the final kilometers; if it starts
with individual time trials, they’ll ride the whole course, maybe even
a few times. They’ll talk to a bunch of reporters at news conferences,
those who are among the top favorites in organizers’ minds even at the
special conference of the favorites. They’ll have meeting after meeting
with Sports Directors, and a day and a half before the big start they’ll
introduce themselves to the public on the stage in a spectacular Team

The day before the race they are left in peace, they have only 24 hours

Every team is based in a certain country. Teams with the highest license,
so those that are part of the UCI WorldTeam, have to perform at all of the
races of the UCI WorldTour3 . But first things first.

The Tour of Spain 2019 was raced by 22 teams. All of the 18 teams then
ranked in UCI WorldTeam were at the start. But 18 is not 22. Here the
teams from a lower category, the so-called UCI ProTeams or profession-
al continental teams, come into play. They are smaller in every aspect;
instead of 27 riders they only need to have 14, and they are required to
ride in races of lower levels, mostly in the continental races organized
by the UCI. We’re especially interested in those that are a part of the UCI
EuropeTour.

So how did these lower level teams find themselves racing in the Tour
of Spain? They get the right to compete by the organizer’s invitation, in
other words they are given a wild card that offers them a chance to ride
in the UCI WorldTour races. A good result in any race at the highest level

For all of you who share the road with us. The fans.

PROLOGUE J une 2013. A hot Saturday, a perfect day for a cookout with a hot grill
and a cold beer. The course of the Tour of Slovenia has meandered to
the Bovec region and is just rolling over Livške Ravne1 .

I haven’t the slightest idea where that is. It can’t be a climb since the
name of the place implies it’s flat. There is no TV coverage.

Vinko is with me and we are driving a car that barely starts and we take
off towards Vršič much too late. Primož and I are not a couple, although I
admit I wouldn’t drive to Vršič just for any friend. This is the first time I’m
going to a race with a climb, because everyone knows that all the real
races are supposed to be on an incline, right?

But I don’t know a single thing about road cycling, except who Lance
is, that there is the Tour in France, and that my dad rides a road bike. Its
handlebars look like pointing downwards horns of some wild animal and
its tires are so thin that next to it a cross-country ski looks as wide as a
tractor tire.

Vinko reads on the internet that Primož is in the breakaway, whatever

that means. They supposedly have a few minutes on those behind
them. Chatter fills the car; he could win this! I don’t even know who those
behind them are while we’re climbing the hill from the other side. And
apparently there’s a blue jersey from the race of Italy riding with him.
I’m drawing blanks. Blue jersey? From Italy? Must be some fashion fad.
Luckily we have a phone so we can read what’s happening from time
to time. But those were the days when coverage and data rates weren’t
what they are today and we have no idea that the phone bill will end up
costing €350, which is an epic disaster.

The breakaway doesn’t last to the end, of course, and he doesn’t win, and
I face a whole bunch of other stuff that makes my brow rise in ignorance

Then they’ll train – training stays on the roster, of course. If the race starts
with a shorter stage, they’ll just check the final kilometers; if it starts
with individual time trials, they’ll ride the whole course, maybe even
a few times. They’ll talk to a bunch of reporters at news conferences,
those who are among the top favorites in organizers’ minds even at the

with Sports Directors, and a day and a half before the big start they’ll
introduce themselves to the public on the stage in a spectacular Team

The day before the race they are left in peace, they have only 24 hours

Every team is based in a certain country. Teams with the highest license,
so those that are part of the UCI WorldTeam, have to perform at all of the
races of the UCI WorldTour3 . But first things first.

The Tour of Spain 2019 was raced by 22 teams. All of the 18 teams then
ranked in UCI WorldTeam were at the start. But 18 is not 22. Here the
teams from a lower category, the so-called UCI ProTeams or profession-
al continental teams, come into play. They are smaller in every aspect;
instead of 27 riders they only need to have 14, and they are required to
ride in races of lower levels, mostly in the continental races organized

A good result in any race at the highest level

happenings and mishaps that happened on the road. The Grand
Tour stages are often the first-class mix of everything – some are
flat, some mountainous, some are hilly, rolling, or varied, and, some
are time trials – everyone can find something for themselves. Shall
we begin?
START
The cyclists are ready to start. Their jerseys are fresh, the numbers
attached.
The official starting list is announced a day before the start – the
teams can change their riders until the very last minute. When the
race starts, no further changes are allowed. Every team gets eight
consecutive numbers for their riders – so from one to eight. The
team leader gets the lowest number, ending in a 1. We’ll never see
number 99 or, for instance, 200 in the races – let’s say I’m speaking
just about the WT.
I hear the riders are not superstitious

the superstition connected to the
(un)lucky number 13 persists within
the peloton. Riders have two numbers pinned to their jerseys on
the backside, one on the left and one on the right side. The rider
with number 13 will turn one of them upside down – or not, but I
really can’t remember the last time I saw two 13s right-side-up.
The organizer provides the riders with a roadbook before the start.

STAGE ONE H old on a second. Stop. What the hell is a team time trial? And if there
is a team trial then there must also be a non-team, let’s say an indi-
vidual one?

Yep, there is. I think it’s best we deal with one cyclist for starters.

 Torrevieja Many times the stage races begin with a time trial – a race against the clock
13.4 KM TTT where the cyclist rides alone and the victory goes to the fastest one. The
cyclists start in one-minute intervals and, commonly, the starting intervals
of the first ten in the general classification are spaced even further apart.
Namely, if there is no time trial scheduled in the first stage, there already

You might remember the double Slovenian win in the Tour de Romandie

a whole second apart. That prologue, held in Neuchâtel in Switzerland
was only 3.87 kilometers long.

Maybe you remember the time trial in Giro in 2019 up the San Luca

for Slovenia.

Pink seems quite an unusual color for a sport like cycling, right? Pink,
yellow, and red20 are the most popular colors among the contenders for
the general classification.

The yellow jersey21 is worn by the leader of the Tour de France and, if

When time trialing, the riders aren’t allowed to draft behind the

the race, but we’ll talk about that later) or the rider in front of them; good
time trialists namely sometimes catch riders who started the race before
them. Time trials differ in length and profiles. They can be completely flat
and straight, mountainous, they can have a finish climb, or they can climb
from start to finish; they can be diverse (ups and downs), they can vary
in technical difficulty - include, corners, roundabouts, and cobblestones,
and so on.

So, how did we start the Tour of Spain? With a crash, true, but with a team
time trial, in fact.

At the stage announcement at the very beginning, there is the abbrevia-

Footage from the sport director’s car later revealed that they were
