1 COMMON MISTAKES
COMMON MISTAKES IN INTERIOR DESIGN
Interior design is a very important step in creating a comfortable living
environment.
Coziness and comfort at your home is a natural desire of any person. Everyone
wants to arrange the space of an apartment or house in a proper way.
But most people do not have knowledge and skills in this area.
Therefore, people have a choice: turn to an architect or make an interior on their
own using their vision and sense of style (which leads to unsuccessful attempts
at interior design).

INTERIOR STUDY

ON YOUR OWN WITH INTERIORBOOK

WHO IS THIS BOOK FOR?

1. YOU ARE A STUDENT OR BEGINNING ARCHITECT

And architects can also make mistakes in their work.

I want to help students and new architects because I know how long it takes to find
information about optimal dimensions and correct location of rooms, furniture
and equipment.

2. YOU WANT TO DESIGN THE INTERIOR OF YOUR APARTMENT

I also want to help people who want to properly decorate the interior of their
apartment and not make huge mistakes since not everyone is ready to pay for
an interior design project and consult with an architect.
People make mistakes due to lack of experience and skills in interior design.

I suggest you find out what mistakes are made in the interior most often and how to
fix them both at the design and operation stage.

In this book, you will find basic information about common interior design mistakes,
space planning, choosing optimal furniture and ergonomic rules.

Foyer

The foyer is the first thing that

a guest sees. And it forms the
first impression not only of
the apartment but also of the
owners.

Often mistakes in the design of

the foyer become noticeable
only when people start living in
an apartment or house.

Bathroom

Although the bathroom

occupies only a small part of
the apartment it is necessary
to approach it responsibly:
making this room thoughtful
and functional is more difficult
than you think.
If you go wrong when
designing or remodeling your
new bathroom then fixing the
mistakes will be difficult.

A common mistake when

decorating modern bathroom
interiors is unused space.

The distribution of free space

is the first problem you will
encounter when designing a
bathroom. You need to think
about what exactly you want
to place in this room.

7 Interiorbook l.1 | @archlesia | archlesia.com | 2020

Kitchen

The most comfortable place in

the apartment is kitchen.

We spend a lot of time in

the kitchen so it should be
comfortable and versatile.

However, mistakes in
kitchen planning can lead to
discomfort.

We not only cook in the kitchen

but also have breakfast, lunch,
dinner or just drink coffee with
family and friends.

This is where communication

takes place so the design of
the kitchen should be beautiful,
ergonomic and functional.

Wrong distances of working

triangle (sink, stove and
refrigerator) can cause
inconvenience.

Regardless of the size or

layout of the kitchen certain
areas of work surface are
needed between a fridge, sink
and a stove.

A distance between the

facades of the kitchen and
«island» is also important.

In almost every kitchen layout

you can find wasted space.
One of the most common
mistakes is choosing wrong
kitchen furniture.

Living room

Central part of any apartment

is the living room. This room
hosts guests, friends and
relatives.

Therefore, you always want

to make this room beautiful
and functional. However, if
you don’t know the basics of
design then you will definitely
make mistakes. To avoid them
further recommendations
should be considered.

Freeing up space is one of

the basic tenets of modern
interiors and there are some
unusual design solutions for
any size that we will explore in
this book.

You need to think over the

basic set and arrangement
of furniture as well as pay
attention to multifunctional
models.

Balcony

Almost every apartment has

a balcony which in most cases
has no functional role.

It is important to place a
storage system on the balcony
and decide on a seating area.

We will consider these layout

options.

9 Interiorbook l.1 | @archlesia | archlesia.com | 2020

Bedroom

Also bedroom is one of the

main rooms in the house. This
is where owners rest after
hard work days.

At first, it may seem that the

layout of the bedroom does
not require special rules but
this is not the case.

The amount of free space

plays an important role when
planning a bedroom.

The main object in each

bedroom is the bed and other
pieces of furniture are already
installed relatively to it.

Many people make mistakes

during creating the design of
the bedroom. We’ll cover them
in this book.

Dressing room

Dressing room is a space that

needs to be designed with a
rational approach.

This can solve storage

problems.

To do so you can follow

the recommended planning
guidelines in this book.

1. Foyer
It is the entrance to the apartment. The foyer and halls connect separate parts
of the apartment. They usually contain wardrobes that increase the comfort of
the apartment.

2. Bathroom
The number of bathrooms depends on the number of bedrooms and family
members.

3. Kitchen
It is the center of the apartment as the whole family often gets together in this
room. The planning covers cooking and eating routines as well as washing dishes.

4. Living room
The living room is designed for relaxation with family, relatives or friends. It is
important to properly design this room and choose furniture based on the size
of the family.

5. Balcony

season balcony can be used for relaxation, eating or as an office space.

6. Bedroom

4.1 The role of the bathroom

Apartment can have multiple bathrooms or a combination of a guest

bathroom and a bathroom depending on the needs of each family.

The bathroom must have ventilation boxes and plumbing so the bathroom
and kitchen are often designed side-by-side to provide the same network.

All plumbing can be chosen compact, for example, many modern toilets are
partially built into the wall.

The powder room can be at least 0.8 m wide and at least 1.2 m long.

Doors should open exclusively outward, for example, from the bathroom
to the foyer. In Russia these are safety rules since in case of loss of
consciousness a person can block the exit from the room with his body.

6.1 The role of the living room

The living room is the place where the family gathers every evening for
relaxation but also where guests are invited for holidays.

Open-plan apartments (studios) are gaining popularity where the division

of living space into zones or rooms can be done using a rack, sliding doors,
a bar counter and other furniture or objects.

There are many ways to divide a room into the required zones.

Find the center of your living room which could be a large dining table or a
huge sofa with a screen or TV.

7.1 The role of the balcony

If you correctly design this part of the apartment you can get a spacious
and functional room.

Here you can arrange gym space or a workplace with a computer desk.

You can design a space for children’s games. Or simply enlarge the kitchen,
dining room or bedroom.

And in order not to use the balcony as a storage place you can place a
cabinet for storing various items.

It can fit a small library with a bookcase, a work area and a coffee table
with soft comfortable chairs.

Each of the areas of the spacious multifunctional bedroom is better defined

clearly. The main element of the bedroom interior is the bed.

The first step is to choose a place for it and then supply the room with
various functional areas.

It is important to discard unnecessary details and pieces of furniture. The

best option is more free space, air and light.

95 Interiorbook l.1 | @archlesia | archlesia.com | 2020

9.1 The role of the dressing room

It is important to properly organize storage for clothes and belongings and

the best option is to design a separate walk-in storage.

It is necessary to think about storage system for shoes, bags, outwear and
casual clothes as well as accessories.

The dressing room includes rods, drawers and shelves.

The upper area is convenient for storing those things that are rarely used.

In the bottom area it is necessary to place rods for hangers and below the
boxes for shoes or accessories.
