PART 1

Digital Photography Basics


Directions: Research the answers to the questions on the attached worksheet, and write them in
your own words. Turn-in with your photo crush. See “Part 2” below. You can copy and paste
directly to this worksheet. Be sure to “turn in” when you are complete.

1. What is a pixel? the part of a sensor which collects photons so they can be
converted into photoelectrons.

2. What is pixelization? when pixels become visible to the naked eye instead of being
seen as seamlessly blended

3. What is resolution and why do you care? Resolution is the quality of an image and you should care
because if you can only see 4 squares you wouldn't know what it is

4. When would you use higher or lower resolution? You use higher resolution when you have
a pretty picture or when you have a big canvas and low resolution when you have little space
and or a small canvas

5. What resolution should an 8 x 10 photo be? 1536 x 1024 pixels minimum for digital
and for print its 1000x 1250

6. What is aperture? How does it affect your photos? The aperture is the opening of the lens
that closes to a small circle to a big circle and it focuses into the image and can blur the
background

7. What is shutter speed? How does it affect your photos? Opens and closes the shutter within
the camera and makes people see moving pictures

8. What is depth of field? When you can tell how far something is each object within a image

9. Digital Photography has 3 steps: Image Capturing, Editing, & Sharing. For each step list at
least two examples of how this can be done.
- Image Capturing taking a picture with my phone, drawing an image

- Editing cropping an image, cutting something out

- Sharing sending to my phone, and sharing to the internet

13. What is RGB? How does it work? describes the colors of images that are viewed on the
monitor

14. What is CMYK? How does it work?

Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key

15. What does the camera’s white balance do? Used so that objects don't appear another
color in the camera
16. What is contrast? Texture highlight and shadows

17. What is the problem when your photo is over or under exposed? The image will turn dark

18. What is a JPG? What is RAW format? Why do professional photographers use RAW?

JPG is a way to compress files. Raw format is uncompressed photos, and they use it to

get the highest quality. 19. Name three editing techniques you might want to use

Lightroom for. 20. What do you hope to learn in this class? I hope to learn how to edit

more pictures

PART 2
Photo Crush: Search the web for a photographer whose work you admire, and would love to be
able to capture images like. Screen shot (shift-command-4) 3 images, put them onto one page,
and type up the photographers name, source for finding their images (website, instagram
handle, etc.) and what it is about their work that you find compelling.
