II. Project Summary
RUNTaway from Innumeracy is an innovative project that will improve
students’ basic skills in fundamental operations of number. It will focus on Grade 7
learners with very poor performance in basic arithmetic operations in Mathematics.
The innovator together with the rest of the Mathematics Teacher will identify Grade
7 students who are non-numerates through the Regional Unified Numeracy Test
(RUNT)s. The innovators will create a suited activity sheets that will allow them to
improve their skills in arithmetic operations remotely with the help of any family
members at home. It will be implemented from January – April 2022, one month per
operation to ensure the mastery of students in each operation. All mathematics
teachers are assigned as the heads in supervision of all activities to be conducted and
to be supported by all non-mathematics teachers both in Senior High School and
Junior High School. The estimated cost of the project is ₱5,000.00 to be outsourced
from possible partners and sponsors.

III. Project Background

The K-12 Basic Education Curriculum framework highlights the

fundamental importance of context in shaping the curriculum, and consequently,
the teaching-learning process. This Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (RA
10533), Sec. 5 states that the DepEd shall adhere to the following standards and
principles in developing the enhanced basic education curriculum: flexible enough
to allow schools to localize, indigenize and enhance the same based on their
respective educational and social contexts. The production and development of
locally produced teaching materials shall be encouraged.
The country was hit by the COVID pandemic and it resulted to temporarily
shutting down of face to face classes. Fortunately, the Department of Education did
not stop from giving quality education for all the Filipino learners. The Lirio M.
Escaño National High School implemented the modular printed mode of delivery
for the school year 2020-2022. The country was hit by the COVID pandemic and it

2
modular printed mode of delivery for the school year 2020-2022. However, the
Mathematics teachers noticed that students cannot perform basic operations that
were supposed to be mastered in their primary school years. In this regard, to
identify the students who needs help to become numerates, the innovators together
with the Mathematics teachers conducted the RUNT. The innovators will create
suited, localized and indigenized activity sheets that will allow them to improve
their skills in arithmetic operations remotely with the help of any family members at
home or teachers who will home visit the student. This project adheres to the
departments’ vision that students learn in a child-friendly and motivating
environment; teachers facilitate learning and constantly nurture every learner.
Administrators and staff, as stewards of the institution, ensure an enabling and
supportive environment for effective learning to happen. Family, community, and
other stakeholders are actively engaged and share responsibility for developing life-
long learners.

Project lay out is attached herewith. (Appendix 1)

IV. Project Objectives

RUNTaway from Innumeracy Project aims to:
A. Equip non- numerate learner’s, the fundamental numeracy skill
B. Improve the numeracy skills of non- numerate students
C. Equip students with localized and indigenized real life applications of the
four fundamental operation
D. To equip non- numerate learner’s, the knowledge of applying general
rules correctly in solving four mathematical fundamental operations

VIII. Next Steps

To ensure the instutionalization, replicability and sustainability of this
innovation, the proponent will undertake the following:

1. Present Project RUNTaway from Innumeracy in the Parent Teacher

Association General Assembly
2. Collaboration with colleagues through a LAC session

9
3. Encourage the teachers to make use of the activity sheets even after Pandemic
4. Monitoring and Evaluating the project regularly through home visitations
