Instructions

READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.

1. This paper consists of FOUR (4) questions. Answer ALL questions.

2. Write your answers in the spaces provided in this booklet.

3. Do NOT write in the margins.

4. ALL WORKING MUST BE SHOWN in this booklet.

5. You may use a calculator to answer questions, but you should note that the use of an
inappropriate number of figures in answers will be penalized.

6. If you need to rewrite any answer and there is not enough space to do so on the
original page, you must use the extra lined page provided at the back (page 10).
Remember to draw a single line through your original answer.

7. If you use the extra page, you MUST write the question number clearly left to the
answer, where the relevant part is included.

1. A spring with its upper end fixed, hangs vertically alongside a millimeter scale. The lower end
of the spring gave the following readings when various masses were hung from it.

(a) Complete the table below [4 marks]

Extension
Mass (kg) Reading (mm) Force applied (N)
(mm)
0.00 110
0.02 121 22N 11mm

0.04 129 27.26N 19mm

0.06 139 28.6N 29mm

0.08 151 29.56 41mm
0.10 161 31.67N 51mm

(a) Plot a graph of extension in (mm) against force in (N). [8 marks]

[acceleration due to gravity, g = 10 N kg − 1]

(b) From the graph find:

(i) the extension of a mass of 0.045 kg.

[1 mark]

(ii) the scale reading when a force of 0.15N is applied

[1 mark]

(iii) gradient of the graph.

[4 marks]
4

(c) What physical quantity does the gradient represent?

[1 mark]

(d) (i) How would you identify the region where proportionality exists?

[1 mark]

(ii) Classify EACH quantity shown in table below, as a scalar or vector by inserting
a tick () in the appropriate column.

2. (a) State the conditions of equilibrium when a body is acted upon by a number of parallel
forces.

[2 marks]

(b) (i) Explain what is meant by

a) stable

b) unstable
5

c) neutral equilibrium.

[3 marks]

(ii) Give examples of each.

a) stable _________________________________________________________

b) unstable ________________________________________________________

c) neutral equilibrium.

________________________________________________________________
[3 marks]

(c) (i) Explain what is meant by center of gravity of a body.

Centre of gravity of a body is the point through which the total weight of the body is

considered to act.
[1 mark]

(ii) Describe how you would determine, by experiment, the center of gravity of a
piece of uniform cardboard of irregular shape.

3. (a) Explain what is meant by ‘Moment of a force about a point’.

[2 marks]

(b) The figure below represents a cross section of a table knife being used to prise off the
lid of a can.

(i) On the figure:

a) indicate the position of the pivot, P, and

b) draw an arrow to show the direction of the force, F, which the knife
exerts on the lid.
[2 marks]

(ii) Calculate the moment of the 30 N force about P’.

[3 marks]
7

(iii) Calculate the magnitude of the force, F, which the knife exerts on the lid.
(Ignore the mass of the knife.)

[3 marks]

(iv) The can exerts an upward force at point, P, on the knife. What is the value of
this force just before the lid moves?

[2 marks]

(v) If the force, F, is too small to lift the lid, suggest TWO changes you might make
to increase the value of F.

[3 marks]

4. The speed-time graph below, not drawn to scale, shows the three-stage journey of a racing car
over a period of 60 seconds.

During the FIRST stage of the journey, the car increased its speed from 0 m/s to 12 m /s in x
seconds accelerating at 0.6 m/s2.

(a) Calculate the value of x.

[4 marks]

(b) (i) What is the gradient of the graph during the SECOND stage?

[2 marks]
9

(ii) Explain, in one sentence, what the car is doing during this stage.

[2 marks]

(c) Calculate the distance travelled by the car on the THIRD stage of the journey.

[3 marks]

(d) Calculate the total distance travelled by the car in the entire journey.
