Type 1 Given a fired bullet, to determine the caliber, type and make of firearm from

which it was fired. This type of problem can be solved by obtaining the bullet evidence
from the autopsy of the victim or in an emergency room setting and sometimes it is
embedded into a nearby surface such as wood or dry wall. When a bullet is fired from a
gun, the gun leaves microscopic marks on the bullet. In this case, the evidence should
be sent to the laboratory and let the firearms examiner perform the evaluation and
comparison of the evidence. The examiner will then assess how similar the two sets of
marks are and determine if the bullets are likely to have been fired from the same gun
or different guns. Any residue on the bullet can be studied and compared to residue on
the hand of a suspect, the gun that was fired, or any object that was close by when the
firearm was used. This information helps researchers uncover the identity of the
shooter.
