Laboratory Exercise No. 4

CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF SWINE

I. INTRODUCTION
Successful swine production requires the application of health-conserving, disease
preventing, and parasite-controlling measures to the breeding, feeding, and managing of the
herd. Care and management of sows are very essential since they are retained in the herd
mainly for breeding. Good management and feeding will minimize problems related to
breeding. Sows should be looked after with particular care so that the piglets are delivered
normally and nursed properly.
To deliver a product of superior quality and safety to the consumer, swine farmers
work hard. Swine farmers should be praised for the improvements in swine management
procedures as a whole during the past few years. It takes many hours to produce the raw
product before the packing business can turn the carcasses into items for the consumer. To
give consumers the lean meat they want, today's swine producers are working to increase the
genetic potential of the pigs. Providing proper housing, nourishment, and health care for the
pigs, as well as making an effort to produce pork without endangering the environment, are
other areas of concern for the swine producer.

II. OBEJECTIVES
At the end of this laboratory, the students was able to:
1. Know and develop skills in the different management practices in swine;
2. Produce good quality and accurate outputs on the different management practices.
III. METHODOLOGY
The laboratory instructor discussed about the importance, procedures, reminders, kits
and other related precautionary measures and materials in performing different routinary
practices for swine. Students was exposed to different swine management practices
available. Guide questions was be provided to the students to support the activity performed.

IV. Questions to Answer

1. Why is castration performed to piglets not intended for breeding purposes?
Male hugs that is raised for meat has historically been castrated to stop unintended
reproduction, facilitate management and handling, and enhance the quality of the meat.

2. Enumerate the advantages and disadvantages of castration.

There are a number of benefits to castration. These include:
 Lowering testosterone levels and preventing production of semen,
 Increasing meat quality
 Creating a more docile animal for draft purposes
 Decreasing costs associated with aggressive, destructive bull behavior
Among the disadvantages of castration are depression, impotence, sterility, obesity,
osteoporosis, hot flashes, and genital modification.

3. Why is tail docking performed? What are the benefits of such practice?
The practice of tail docking is applied to young piglets to avoid a potential later
problem of tail biting.
4. Why is record keeping important specially to sows?
Record keeping is important to keep tract of the history of hogs especially the sow. By
having a record it will become easier to track the health, performance, how many piglets a
certain sow produced. If a certain sow should be kept or disregarded.

5. How can identification (ear tagging, tattooing, ear notching) of swine help in the
assessment of their production performance?
Pig identification such as ear notching allows for easy identification of pigs for
breeding, health and performance records.
6. What is the importance of knowing the health condition of hogs in relation to medication
and application of proper management as a whole?
The prevention of infectious diseases in pigs is important for both animal welfare and
economic productivity. Moreover, prevention is also important for food safety and public
health when zoonotic pathogens are concerned.

7. Why do we need to perform needle teeth cutting in piglets?

Pigs are born with eight needle teeth. The main reason for choosing to clip needle
teeth is to prevent potential damage to the sow's underline, which may lead to a reluctance of
the sow to allow nursing. It can also prevent facial injuries to littermates when fighting over
teats.

8. How does artificial insemination hasten the breeding process?

It makes possible the mating of animals with great variations in body size with no
injury to either of the animal.

9. Why do we need to expose sows to boars during artificial insemination?

During insemination, the presence of a boar, some back pressure, and flank massage
may increase the quantity or force of uterine contractions that take semen from the bottle and
deliver it into the uterus.

10. Discuss the importance of following the proper procedure in transporting and keeping
semen in a cool container.

It is important to take care when storing and handling semen. This is

because rough handling, temperature shock and exposure to light can all
damage semen. If the storage temperature fluctuates beyond the minimum or
maximum recommended figures, motility can fall and sperm agglutination can
occur – this is when sperm stick together. If this happens, it decreases the total
number of sperm per dose.
