Exercise No.1
Farm Tour

INTRODUCTION

Farm animals are animals raised or kept primarily for consumption, to generate
income and to help with some farm operations. The difference between farm animals and
wild animals is that farm animals live among men while wild animals live in the wild, forest,
jungle, etc. Domesticated animals raised in agricultural settings are known as livestock.
These animals generate a variety of food items such meat, eggs, milk, fur, leather, and wool
in addition to providing labour. In other instances, the phrase is only used to describe farmed
ruminants like cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs, or just to describe animals kept for human
consumption.
Farm tour is important to us who’s new to a farm, it helps us familiarize the different
kind of animal species, their production, behaviour and characteristics and the different types
of facilities of animals in department of animal science have.

OBJECTIVES
1. Identify various animal species raised at the Department of Animal Science and discuss the
purpose they may serve, and;
2. Discuss basic farm settings.
METHODOLOGY
Since the laboratory activity was given at the first meeting, the laboratory in-charge
oriented the students about the class policies and grading of the laboratory course. The
instructor provided the student with some insights in animal production/husbandry.After the
classroom discussion, the students was toured to the Poultry project, Swine project, Goat and
Sheep project and Beef cattle project of the Department of Animal Science.

1. Discuss the use of each animal facility and equipment observed during the farm tour (you
may support your answer with articles)
Facilities are one of the most important to consider for housing animal projects.Swine
housing is designed to protect pigs and give them the most ideal environment for growth and
production. The facility that the department of animal science have in the swine project is, it
is maid of metal pins that inches distance to each other and the the height is meter long the
purpose of this kind of housing is to allow air to enter , the housing for piglets are separated
also the saw and guilts pig pen are separated with fins. The equipment that the swine project
have are water system, nipple drinker and litters as their floor. For the poultry project, the
housing of each species are separated. There are two type of housing they have, the open
spaced and the breeding area/ closed area. The equipment they have are incubators for
artificial hatching of eggs ,the nest for the chicken to lay their eggs. Feeding and drinking
trough and brooder for heated house of chicks to provide a warm and safe environment for
chicks to grow and develop until they are large enough to be moved to a coop or other
housing. Chicks need to be kept warm, dry, and comfortable to ensure their healthy growth
and development. And lastly the goat and sheeps, the facilities they have are confined
housing. The goats and sheeps have separated housing .There are separated pens in every
goats , the newly gave birth goats are separated to other goats.

Piglet: Young swine.

3. In your own opinion, in what way the information you acquired in the farm tour could
help you become experts in the field of animal production?
Farm tour thought us the different facilities and equipment in every animal project
have. It also give us some information about every animal species. The information that I’ve
acquired, will thought me how to be expert or how to handle the animal production.
