STUDENT EVALUATIONS

Students had the opportunity to provide me feedback during my co-teaching in Professional School
Counseling with Dr. Colette Dollarhide during Spring 2023. This course was for first year masters level
school counseling students and contained 10 students. Students filled out a student evaluation at the
conclusion of their semester with a mixture of scaled and open-ended questions.

In this course, I co-constructed the syllabus, altering assignments and content flow in order to provide
more engagement and student choice. In addition to co-delivering content weekly, I independently
designed and taught five weeks on the following topics:
● Career Planning K-12
● Collaboration & Consultation
● Using Data in Schools
● School Counseling Leadership
● Healthy Development

Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive with all SEI dimensions scoring a 4.9/5. Here are a few
excerpts from the open-ended question that welcomed comments, feedback, and thoughts to help me
grow as an instructor:

“You are seriously gifted at what you do and your passion shines through in everything you do.
You weave in humor and engaging activities that make learning stick. You offer real life
examples, experiences, resources, and practices that are so intentional and focus on social
justice by providing resources and access to students and their families.”

“Sarah, you have been such a great support this semester. You are very knowledgeable and I love
when you share your experiences and stories. Your lessons were always so engaging - please
continue that - it is rare in college/graduate classes for us to actually feel engaged - you did it
well! You are also so kind and encouraging. You and Dr. D have been the best team all semester
and I truly believe you two have been the best teachers I have had this year.”

“Your passion for this profession is unmatched and is so inspiring. I hope to be even half the
counselor you are! All lessons were well organized and information was communicated clearly.
We could tell you genuinely cared about us and wanted to be in class. Thank you!”
Furthermore, Dr. Dollarhide was able to provide feedback as well about my teaching throughout the
semester, as she observed all my independent lessons and participated in our weekly co-teaching. I am
lucky and blessed to learn to be a counselor educator from someone like Dr. Dollarhide, who has
consistently and clearly brought her heart and soul to the classroom. I’ve included some excerpts from
her review below:

“You spoke so clearly and passionately about your love for the profession, and about the
ethical, moral, and professional boundaries of the profession. You also empowered them in case
studies and other exercises to use their own intellect and creativity to answer professional
questions. Using those techniques, you engaged how they feel about themselves, the
profession, and their students. You tapped their passion as they thought about their students,
which is brilliant.”

“I loved your use of case studies, and surveys, and games to allow them to practice the skills of
the profession. You gave them safety to try, and you always ALWAYS found important positive
comments to offer to them when they answered a question or summarized their thinking
about the case.”

“You gave them the space and time to think, and create, and discuss with each other for the
cases, and your teaching provided opportunities for them to both "show" but also "tell what
you know".”

“I really loved watching you in [the context] aspect of the class -- how you grouped them so
that they worked as a team on all these cases and challenging scenarios. You spoke to them as
adults, and you valued them both as individuals and as a group. It was clear that you had
created the challenges and provided them with the tools to answer each challenge. It was like
watching an escape room challenge! They worked together and you gave them lots of time to
work.”
