Introduction

In the past years where the technology spread widely in all people aspect; thus, it
changes the way of people do such ac communication, learning, and earning for
living. The tiny part of technology, social media, allows people to communicate
further away which does not demand face to face while communicating each other
and it is said that social media is the most predominant technology invention which
ever created by human. Nowadays, every filed such as health, defense, banking,
commerce, and others are influenced by advance technology; so, using current
technology is a must today (Bolat, 2018). The rapid social media users allow them to
access almost what they want know (Kavaliauskienė & Ashkinazi, 2014).

There is a research which is conducted by Alfahadi (2017) investigated the role

of social media in English learning and he tries to reveal how English learner use
social media to improve English skills. His research is conducted in Tabuk
University, and the result shows that social media provides perfect combination of
learning which using sound, text, and videos; thus, English learner can learn form
giving comment in comment section and waiting for feedback from other learners.
Other research investigates how the teacher uses social media as well; the research is
conducted by Unsal (2018) which reveals that teacher tents to use social media in
their daily basis. Alberth et al (2018) says that social media provides long life
learning platform namely Udemy, Coursera, YouTube and others supporting their
professional skill development.

Along side with advance technology, especially in communication, the learners

use various platform to learn and practice their own skill; the platform they use
provides simplicity yet powerful to accommodate their learning need. Using social
media in English learning such as twitter give more time to learner to practice their
English writing and the learner get feedback directly from others; hence,
collaborative learning environment are created. Likewise, Dunn (2013) and
Handayani (2016) report that using social media in learning gives more benefit and
triggers learners’ motivation and engagement in learning process; Alorani & Cardoso
(2018) report the learners feel more freely addressing their perspective, so they
engage in discussion and they get plenty useful information from around the globe
through social media.

There are plenty of research investigating the use social media such as Facebook,
Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp, and another platform. Furthermore, learners use social
media effortless to help them learning language, on the other hand, many of them use
it for personal use rather than for learning new skills as Dunn (2013) stated that
learners spent their time accessing social media for their pleasure. In contrast, Akhiar,
Mydin, & Kasuma (2017); Alnujaidi (2016); Odewumi, yusuf, & Oputa (2018)
claimed that learners obtain more benefit accessing social media such as the change
in their perspective, behavior, and expectation.

Furthermore, Instagram is one of the well-known social media such as Facebook,

Twitter and others, yet it is hard to find the research that investigate the use Instagram
to help English language learners. So, it needs more investigation on how Instagram
triggers and develop learners’ motivation on enhancing English language skills; thus,
learners obtain the learning experience not only just for personal matters. As known,
Instagram was initiated by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger around 2010; Instagram
allows users to share their precious moment in a form of photos and videos, also
allows to express themselves in a form of text right below photos or videos. Like any
other social media such as Facebook and Twitter, Instagram allows its users to
connect with their colleagues and relatives.

A number of previous studies reported that Instagram helps learners improving

their English skills along with communication skill namely arguing and clarifying.
Instagram triggers learners to have writing competences due to interesting pictures
which stimulating writing ideas.
