This course provides learners with the fundamental knowledge and principles for the treatment
of craniomaxillofacial fractures and their complications. It covers diagnostic and treatment
principles for midface and mandibular fractures, as well as the prevention and treatment of
complications.
1. Online Preparations—4 weeks prior to the face-to-face event
During these 4 weeks, it is recommended participants complete a self-assessment and conduct
online self-study, including recommended reading material, viewing videos and completion of
surgical simulation modules. Participants will receive a link to the learning materials from their
event organizer.
2. Face-to-face event—2 days
The face-to-face event is delivered through a combination of short lectures, small group
discussions, and practical exercises. This combination enables participants to hear, discuss, and
apply the concepts of facial trauma management.
3. Online Follow-up
During the week after the course, participants will complete an online evaluation and post-
course assessment.
Goal of the Course
The goal of this AO CMF course is to address the core concepts necessary to manage acute facial
trauma.
Target Audience
This course is designed for surgeons in training in the fields of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery,
Otolaryngology, Plastics and Reconstruction, Ophthalmology and Oculoplastics. Some practicing
surgeons my also find this course beneficial.
Faculty
Dr. Shumrick has spent over 35 years managing complex facial trauma and reconstructive issues in both academic and private practice settings. He
was a full professor of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck surgery and director of Facial Plastic Surgery at the University of Cincinnati for 21 years.
Currently he is the director of the Trihealth Center for Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery.
John Frodel, MD is board-certified with the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of
Otolaryngology. He received his medical degree from the University of Washington, School of Medicine prior to completing training in General
Surgery at Harvard Surgical Service in Boston and his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington in
Seattle. In addition, he completed a Fellowship in Facial Plastic Surgery at the University of California in San Francisco. Dr. Frodel has been a full-
time academic faculty member at the University of Iowa School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and the University of
New Mexico School of Medicine, and at the Geisinger Medical Center, and now the Guthrie Medical Group. His special interests include complex
revision cranio-orbital surgery, facial reconstructive surgery, functional nasal surgery and rhinoplasty, and aging facial rejuvenation surgery, as well
as facial implant surgery. He has served in executive leadership positions with the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery, the American Board
of Facial Plastic Surgery, and with AO North America.
Dr. Jason E. Portnof is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons
(FACS), the American College of Dentists (FACD) and the International College of Dentists (FICD). His interests include the full scope of oral and
maxillofacial surgery with an emphasis on the correction of dentofacial deformities, orthognathic surgery (corrective jaw surgery), maxillofacial
reconstructive surgery, corrective jaw surgery (for TMJ), oral and maxillofacial pathology, and complex dental implantology. Dr. Portnof graduated
with honors from the Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in Ft. Lauderdale. He also earned an MD from Weill Cornell Medical
College in New York City, where he was trained in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He received fellowship training in pediatric maxillofacial
surgery/craniomaxillofacial surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Portnof is a past Chair of the AAOMS Committee on
Cleft, Craniofacial and Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (CCCPOMS) and the pediatric consultant to the AAOMS Committee on Anesthesia
(CAN). He serves on the Board of Directors of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. Dr. Portnof is a board examiner for the American
Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). He is Past President of the Florida Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (FCPA) and is the
President of the Florida Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (FSOMS). Dr. Portnof has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and presented
both nationally and internationally. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor and Past Director: Pediatric Maxillofacial Surgery & Craniomaxillofacial
Surgery, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine
Dr. Suryadevara is a double board certificated facial plastic surgeon and otolaryngologist. He completed residency at SUNY Upstate Medical and
Facial Plastics Fellowship at the University of Washington. He currently serves as Professor and Interim Chair of Otolaryngology at SUNY Upstate
Medical in Syracuse, NY.
Grew up in Charlottesville, VA. Completed undergrad and medical school at University of Virginia. Completed residency at University of Rochester
in upstate New York. Trained under Yadro Ducic in Fort Worth, Texas for a year and now back on as faculty at University of Rochester.
