Renaissance – The Revival of Art and Literature

- Renaissance meaning rebirth


- Includes painting, sculpture, architecture, and allied arts produced in Europe between 14th and 16th
centuries.
- A new way of thinking was introduced – HUMANISM.
- French translation of the Italian rinascita.
Two principal components of Renaissance style:
- A revival of the Classical forms originally developed by the Ancient Greeks and Romans.
- An intensified interest in humanism and assertion of the importance of the individual.

Painting Techniques
Linear Perspective - The relative size, shape, and position of figures determined by imaginary lines.
Pictorial Plane – The imaginary plane on which the painted image is created and viewed.
Spatial Depth – An illusion of distance.
Sfumato – Comes from the Italian word “Sfumare” which means to “evaporate like smoke”.
Cangiante – Comes from the Italian word “Cangiare” which means to change.
Chiaroscuro – The use of contrasts between light and dark.
Unione - Similar to sfumato but maintains vibrant colors.
Trompe L’oeil – Illusionistic painting technique that means to “fool the eye”.
Foreshortening – portray or show (an object or view) as closer than it is.
Quadratura - describes a form of illusionistic mural painting in which images of architectural features are painted
onto walls.

Art of The Romantic Period (1800-1810)


Romanticism – A movement in which the artist of Neo-Classical Period sought to break new ground in the expression
of emotion, both subtle and stormy.

Characteristics of Romantic Period Paintings:


- Shows height of action
- Emotional extremes
- Celebrated nature as out of control
- Dramatic compositions
- Heighted sensations (life and death moments)
- Paintings focus on Emotions.

Francisco Goya (1746 – 1826) Spain


- A commissioned Romantic Painter by the King of Spain.
- The Last of the “Old Masters” and The First of the “Moderns”.
Goya’s works:
- The Third of May
- The Burial of Sardine
- Saturn devouring his son.

Eugene Delacroix (1789 – 1863) France


- considered the greatest French Romantic painter of all.
- The most influential of Romantic Painters.
Delacroix’s work:
- Liberty leading the people.

Jean Louis Theodore Gericault (1791 – 1824) France


- was the first French master and the leader of the French realistic school.
- His masterpieces were energetic, powerful, brilliantly colored, and tightly composed.
Gericault’s works:
- The raft of the Medusa
- Changing Chasseur
- Insane Woman
