The Twenty Instructions of Tapichritsa.

Dogchen has fallen "shang shung nyan gyud"

Pyeongchen Tapihritza
At first, Tapihritsa gave instructions on the "Four Benefits":
1. Vision: Let the unconditional and pervasive consciousness reach a liberated vision, free from the
action of the mind; this is a good path.
2. Meditation: Let the experience free from the basis and conditional become clear, unbiased
meditation; it is a good path.
3. Behavior: Let the vision, free from dualistic choice, directly taking actions, distinct from flexibility
and lack of attachment; this is a good way.
4. Fruit: Let limiting hopes and fears dissolve into an unattainable self-propelled state of self-
realization; that is a good path.
Having given this teaching, Tapihritsa was silent for a moment, then continued his speech by
presenting the teaching on "Four Ways to Apply the Practice":
1. You cannot practice the nature of phenomena; use the practice free state of nature of phenomena.
2. You cannot understand the Dharmakaya through causal links(logic) of the mind; apply the mind
free of cause and secondary cause.
3. You can't find essential knowledge; apply what you can't find.
4. You cannot change by trying; be consistent.
Then, after being in a silent state of meditation, Tapihritsa explained "Five ways to practice":
1. Since the natural state is free from addiction, there is unconditional manifestation; practice which
is beyond unconditional and addiction.
2. Since there is no desire and attachment to objects, liberation is attained without removing objects;
practice which is beyond attachment and freedom.
3. Since the mind is not subject to birth and death, there is staying in the unborn nature; practice
which is beyond filling and emptying.
4. Since there are no words and expressions, there is staying in the space of silence; practice which is
beyond development and decline.
5. Originally, there is no separation from the Natural State and no connection to the outward vision;
practice which is outside of separation and out of connection.
Tapihritsa said, "Watch yourself. Do you have this knowledge or not? "He became silent, immersed
in contemplation, then after a while he spoke again and began to explain the teaching of the "Four
Methods of Nature":
1. Practice meditation free from temporary restrictions; dwell in nature that is beyond time.
2. Practice meditation free from distractions; stay without distractions in the nature of the space of
great bliss.
3. Practice meditation which is continuous; dwell in a natural state which is not interrupted by
anything.
4. Apply the state that is beyond birth and death, which is in the essential nature; dwell in the unborn
oneness of nature.
After this Tapihritsa plunged into silent contemplation for some time, then asked again, "Look, do
you have this knowledge?" And in a moment, he began to explain the doctrine of the Three
Perceptions.
1. When you come to understand that there is no independent existence, you come to understand
oneness.
2. When you understand non-duality, you understand the taste of unity.
3. Once you have understood the meaning of directionlessness, you understand the limitlessness.
He then added, "When you have these three insights, you become a yogi."
It was in order to present these important teachings to his disciple Nanger Lodpo Tapihritsa that he
took birth in the body of a child. He continued: "These exercises will frighten people with a limited
worldview. They cannot be understood by the normal rational mind. Hide these teachings in the
secret place of your mind". And he completed his training by saying, "If you always remember me,
you will meet me; if you forget me, you will never meet me."
Nangjer Lodpo and Mo Jungdrung began writing down these exercises, the last exercises of
Tapihritsa, and they became well-known and revered in the Bon tradition, as they were the first to
keep written records of the exercises.
This is the origin of the text "Shang Shung Nyan Gyud", which was passed on to us living in the
present time.
