CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PHILOSOPHY 2

Classroom Management Philosophy

My classroom management philosophy will be similar to my teaching philosophy as it

will be student-centered, and I will always be willing to adjust it if needed. Constructivism was

at the heart of my teaching philosophy, and it will also be the same for my classroom

management philosophy. What I love about this teaching style is the fact it is incredibly centered

on students and their interests. At the beginning of the year, I will have specific rules that I

discuss with my class to confirm my students are aware of my expectations for the year ahead. I

will make sure that I am creating a learning environment that is focused on the students and will

ensure to maintain that environment during the entire school year.

At the beginning of the year, I will state our classroom rules clearly, but also be sure that I

do not give them too many to overwhelm them. Janelle Cox states, “Because rules are meant to

serve students, they should be logical and straightforward enough that they make sense after

minimal explanation” (Cox, 2019). I will plan to have all my rules center around respect; respect

yourself, respect others, respect your teacher, respect your class, and respect your school. These

are simple rules that students can remember easily, and cover all the key rules that I would like to

achieve in my classroom. I will discuss in greater detail what each respect category means to my

students, and want them to understand all of them. I also want to show that my students know I

am there for them, and that they can come to me no matter what. I want my actions to show that I

will support them throughout the year, and create the best learning environment for each of them.

As far as the learning environment that I want to create, I want to have a space where

every student feels safe, loved, and supported. Western Governors University states, “A safe

learning environment goes beyond the classroom; it’s the intangible space that supports your

students in the pursuit of knowledge, that inspires curiosity, and that makes them feel empowered

to participate in class discussions” (Western Government University, 2022). I want to show

kindness and love to students no matter if they are having a good day or a bad day. I will model

the correct behavior that I want them to show to their classmates, and I hope by doing so, my

students will show one another love and respect. Although there may be some setbacks that

occur during the school year, I will have strategies on how to create and maintain my ideal

learning environment.

I think the best way to create and maintain my ideal learning environment will be to

reward the positive behavior that I see from my students, as well as stopping any negative

behavior. If I notice a student not following the rules of respect in our classroom, I will put a stop

to the behavior immediately so that the other students know that it will not be accepted, or

tolerated. The University of Washington states, “Stay calm and listen to student concerns –

identifying the catalyst for disruption can help you address the situation in the moment or in a

later meeting” (University of Washington, n.d.). I think this is a great idea to manage negative

behavior in the classroom because it will make it less likely to happen again. For the students

that do follow our classroom rules, I think it would be beneficial, and fun, to have a reward

system. These could be things like lunch with a friend, homework passes, stickers, bookmarks,

or fun pencils. Any small item or special pass would be fantastic to encourage students to follow

the rules of the class.

All of these things will help in creating the learning environment that I want for my

classroom. I will start my year by stating my rules of respect, then create a learning environment

that ensures every student feels safe and comfortable, and finally, work to maintain this

environment by putting a stop to negative behavior and rewarding those who follow the

classroom rules. Each new day will pose new challenges, but I am prepared to handle whatever

difficulties come my way, and I look forward to the day I can implement everything in my

classroom.
