2020 OPV 112: Theme 3: Assignment 1: 20 marks

Please consult your electronic textbook under the heading Library References on
ClickUP. Turn to page 41 and find the activity at the end of the page. You need to do
Question 1 of this activity for Assignment 1, i.e.
Reflect on the schooling that you have received. Now compare (say what is similar)
and contrast (say what is different) between your schooling and that experienced by
learners during these historical periods:
1. Traditional indigenous educational practices [Compulsory]
2. Education at the Cape during the Dutch East India Company (1652-1795) and
Batavian rule (1803-1806)
3. Education under British colonial rule in the Cape (1807-1910) and Natal (1843-
1910)
4. Education in the Boer Republics
5. Mission education in South Africa
6. Education from the time of the South African War until the National Party came
into power (1902-1948)
7. National Party rule and education under apartheid (1948-1994) [Compulsory]

The assignment is a group assignment comprising 4-6 group members. Historical

period 1 & 7 are compulsory. Students may then choose any two periods from
number 2-6. This is an online assignment.
