    This poem describes the speaker's alter ego or inner self that struggles to break through. This alter ego is nameless, expressionless, and hidden but also powerful. When angered, it transforms the speaker like the Hulk, allowing superhuman strength and abilities to perform powerful acts before subsiding back into calmness. This alter ego developed during the speaker's teenage years as rage kept her apart from others, but her family's love helped build her character. Her true self is best known by this alter ego.

    Conchas y Café - Assignment #3

    Alter Ego (My Alternate Self)

    Who struggles through my protective shield,


    a nameless soul, flat affect, yet dependent
    timeless yet unrevealed
    whose lifeless motions can be concealed.
    Intermittently I hear inner roars, who proceeds
    to break through and become transcendent?

    Admit to teen outburst emotions—the Hulk when pissed off transforms


    to a dependable brilliantly intense color of red/green.
    Enraged, one powerful punch deforms
    entire cities with superpowers when needed, are performed
    and when done, the red/green subsides and gentle submission of calmness is felt.
    This one, I know you know, comes between

    the natural growing bones and muscles from my mind and heart,
    especially when growing up
    rage kept this teenage girl apart.
    Family’s love built her integrity and moral values, the best piece of art
    Friends’ not so…reason for this one to hang around longer.
    You know me best, my thoughts and feelings when happy or corrupt.
