Intro to Terrorism

Terrorism: Any violent action or threat of violent action to try to get


people, groups of people, or the government to change their mind.
Terrorist: The person who commits the act of terrorism.

Middle Eastern Culture
Family is one of the most important things to people in the Middle East. Father is known as the head of
the household and provides money for the family. The mother is known as the greater influence on the
children, because she helps them at home. In the middle east, it's very common to find kids, parents,
uncles and aunts, grandparents and cousins living in the same home.

Islam is the most dominant religion in the middle east. Judaism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism are also
very common in the middle east. The most common prayer that people is called Namaz.

Many foods are also common in the middle east like rice bread, lamb, chicken, fish and more. Some
middle eastern dishes are hummus, Falafel, kabobs, tabbouleh and many more.

We will be making an arts and crafts project of the Islamic Symbol.

and northeast Africa. It extends

Sea in the south, and about 1,000
miles from the Mediterranean
Sea in the west to the mountains
of Iran.

side of Israel, and it's where many Palestinian people live.

Largest city in Turkey that was once called Constantinople: The largest city in Turkey, which used to be called Constantinople, is now known as
Istanbul. It's a bustling city with lots of history and culture.

The capital city of Iraq: The capital city of Iraq is Baghdad. It's an important city where the government of Iraq is located.

Sea which borders Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt: The sea that borders all these countries is called the Mediterranean Sea. It's a big body
of water that connects these countries together.

The lowest point on Earth: The lowest point on Earth is called the Dead Sea. It's a special place located between Israel and Jordan, and it's known for
its super salty water and the ability to let you float easily in it.

This movie clip is from Zero Dark 30, a movie about Osama Bin Laden and Al
Qaeda. The movie talks about the process of America going to Afghanistan and
keeping troops there in order to maintain peace in the Middle East. This was a series
of events that led to the bombings of 9/11 in the United States. In this clip notice how
the man figures out which figures are male and female based on what role they
play in middle eastern culture.
