CANVAS/DRILL: A heavy duty fabric often
made out of cotton. Very hard-wearing and
strong - perfect for jackets, pants,
overalls, tote bags, outdoor cushions and
furniture.
CHIFFON: A sheer, delicate and light-
weight fabric that can easily pucker.
Best avoided if you are a beginner. Can
be used for formal dresses, wedding
dresses and lightweight blouses.
CREPE: Often light-weight and made from
polyester, it can be tricky to work with
for beginners. Perfect for dresses,
shirts, blouses, skirts and pants.
CORDUROY: A mid-heavy weight textured,
ribbed fabric. Can be quite warm and
therefore is perfect for pants, skirts,
jackets and other winter clothes.
COTTON: Made from natural fibre, easy to
work with and great for beginners. Cotton
is mid-weight and durable and perfect for
dresses, shirts, quilting, homewares, and
most sewing projects.
DENIM: A very strong fabric made from
cotton. Can be stiff at first but does
soften after wearing and washing over
time. Mostly used for jeans and jackets.
FLANNEL/FLANNELETTE: A warm, soft fabric
made from natural fibre. Perfect for
sleepwear and blankets.
FLEECE: A mid-heavy weight fabric that is
usually made from polyester. A soft and
warm fabric that can be used for blan-
kets, sweaters and sweatpants.
JERSEY: A soft and stretchy knit fabric.
Can be used for t-shirts, turtle-necks,
baby clothes, and sleepwear.
LACE: A delicate and decorative fabric
that can be used to embellish clothing
and homewares.
LINEN: Made from natural fibre, linen is
a breathable, mid-weight fabric that is
perfect for summer clothing such as
dresses, shirts, shorts, pants and
skirts. Due to being made up of natural
fibres, it is quite textured and can
crease very easily (but it’s worth it!).
ORGANZA: Often made from polyester, or-
ganza is a light-weight sheer fabric that
is often used in costumes.
POLY COTTON: A blend of cotton and poly-
ester. Easy to use for beginners and the
polyester helps reduce the ‘creaseiness’
of the cotton. Great for dresses, shirts,
blouses, skirts etc. however 100% cotton
has a much nicer ‘feel’ and is much more
breathable.
POLYESTER: Made from synthetic fibre. A
very durable fabric, but not very breath-
able. Polyester is a broad term that can
be made into lots of different fabric
‘types’ such as stretch, woven and sheer.
RAYON/VISCOSE: A synthetic fabric made
from natural fibres. Has a lovely feel
and drape, however can be tricky to work
with. Perfect for dresses, blouses,
shirts, skirts etc.
SATIN: A soft, shiny fabric often used
for lining garments.
SILK: A luxurious fabric made from fibre
produced by silkworms. Often very expen-
sive and used for formal wear.
SPANDEX/LYCRA: A very stretchy fabric
perfect for activewear and swimwear.
TAFFETA: A crisp fabric often made from
polyester. Often used for costumes and
formal wear.
VELVET: A luxurious, textured fabric that
is soft to touch. Can come in a range of
different weights and can be used for
dresses, coats, pants, upholstery, and
soft furnishings.
WOOL: A mid-heavy weight fabric made from
animal fibres. Wool is breathable and
very warm making it perfect for pants,
coats, jackets and other outerwear.
