Intro
This eBook is a collection of scales for 5-string bass guitar in graphic presentations with complementary
information. The included scales can be considered as the most important scales to learn for the guitarist. There
are several methods for making it easier to learn scales. One obvious way is to notice that they are movable,
meaning scales of a certain category has the same pattern. Another helpful method is to think about the
intervals, which also are the same for each category. Other specific learning tips can be found in each text
section that precedes the graphical overviews.

Thanks a lot for purchasing this eBook!

***

A tip
If you are new to scales, there are much information to absorb. A shortcut is to observe how patterns are
repeating between scales with the root on 5th and 4th strings respectively.

FAQ
How to read the scale diagrams?
The circles indicate positions on the fingerboard for tones in the specific scale (circles with darker color
represent root notes, the first note in the scale). The numbers above the diagram indicate the frets.

The horizontal lines are representations of the strings. From lowest to the highest string, these are B, E, A, D
and G. The vertical lines are representations of the frets, including the nut as the thicker line. And lastly, the
dots on the bottom represent the typical configuration of fret inlays on the guitar fingerboard.

The empty fingerboard diagram below shows also the tuning (to the left) and strings numbers (to the right):

The FAQ continues in the appendix (at the end of the eBook).

Major
Major is the most fundamental scale in Western music and works as a reference to all other scales, which is best
illustrated with its numeric scale formula: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7.
It is a seven-note scale (septonic scale type).

Learn the Major scale

The Major scale can be described as intervals, as semi-notes or steps on the bass guitar fingerboard, written as 2
- 2 - 1 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 1 from the first note to the next octave. This tells us that the scale consists of half and whole
steps. The table below illustrates this (with C Major as example).

Intervals 2 2 1 2 2 2 2
C Major C D E F G A B C

The scale can be played on the bass from different starting positions in which the first scale note functions as
the root tone.

The Major is relative to Minor (for example, C Major is relative to A Minor), which means that both scales
include the same notes but with a different tonal center. The Major is also identical with the Ionian mode (for
example, C Major is identical to C Ionian).

Minor
The Minor scale is one of the most common scales and the logical second scale to learn after Major. The scale
is sometimes written as Natural Minor to distinguish it from other Minor scale categories.
It is a seven-note scale (septonic scale type).

Learn the Minor scale

The Minor scale can be described as intervals, as semi-notes or steps on the bass guitar fingerboard, written as 2
- 1 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 2 from the first note to the next octave. This tells us that the scale consists of half and whole
steps. The table below illustrates this (with C Minor as example).

Intervals 2 1 2 2 1 2 2
C Minor C D Eb F G Ab Bb C

The scale can be played on the bass from different starting positions in which the first scale note functions as
the root tone.

The Minor is relative to Major (for example, A Minor is relative to C Major), which means that both scales
include the same notes but with a different tonal center. The Minor is also identical with the Aeolian mode (for
example, A Minor is identical to A Aeolian).

2 Major second Supertonic
b3 Minor third Mediant

5 Perfect fifth Dominant
b6 Minor sixth Submediant
b7 Minor seventh Subtonic

The formula names b3, b6 and b7 refer to a flattened third, a flattened sixth and a flattened seventh (with the
Major scale formula as reference).

Melodic Minor
The Melodic Minor scale differs from the Natural Minor by containing one instead of three flattened notes
compared to Major.
It is a seven-note scale (septonic scale type).

Learn the Melodic Minor Scale

The scale can be described as intervals, as semi-notes or steps on the bass guitar fingerboard, written as 2 - 1 - 2
- 2 - 2 - 2 - 1 from the first note to the next octave. This tells us that the scale consists of half and whole steps.
The table below illustrates this (with C Melodic Minor as example).

Intervals 2 1 2 2 2 2 1
C Melodic Minor C D Eb F G A B C

The easiest way to memorize the scale is probably to treat it as a Natural Minor scale but observing that the 6th
and 7th scale degrees both moves a step in the scale pattern.

The scale is identical with the Major scale apart from the minor third. Because of this, it is sometimes referred
to as Ionian b3 scale.

Harmonic Minor
The Harmonic Minor scale differs from the Natural Minor by containing two instead of three flattened notes.
It is a seven-note scale (septonic scale type).

Learn the Harmonic Minor Scale

The scale can be described as intervals, as semi-notes or steps on the bass guitar fingerboard, written as 2 - 1 - 2
- 2 - 1 - 3 - 1 from the first note to the next octave. This scale has an exotic sound caused by the whole and a
half distance between the sixth and seventh degrees; the table below illustrates this (with C Harmonic Minor as
example).

Intervals 2 1 2 2 1 3 1
C Harmonic Minor C D Eb F G Ab B C

The easiest way to memorize the scale is probably to treat it as a Natural Minor scale but observing that the 6th
scale degree moves a step in the scale pattern.

Mixolydian
Mixolydian is the fifth mode of the Major scale.
It is a seven-note scale (septonic scale type).

Learn the Mixolydian scale

The Mixolydian scale can be described as steps on the bass guitar fingerboard according to the following
formula: whole, whole, half, whole, whole, half and whole from the first note to the same in the next octave.

Intervals 2 2 1 2 2 1 2
C Mixolydian C D E F G A Bb C

Since this is a Major mode (it can also be described as a dominant mode), it contains exactly the same notes as
a Major scale (for example, C Mixolydian is relative to F Major), but with a different tonal center.

One way to learn to learn this scale is to think of it as the relative Major but with the 7th scale degree moving
one fret in the scale pattern.

Scale degrees

Formula Intervals Degrees

1 Unison Tonic
2 Major second Supertonic
3 Major third Mediant
4 Perfect fourth Subdominant
5 Perfect fifth Dominant
6 Sixth Submediant
b7 Minor seventh Subtonic

C7 C E G Bb
C Major C D E F G A B
C Mixolydian C D E F G A Bb

As shown by the comparison, only one note differs between the scales: the 7th scale degree.

Interval formulas
In each scale overview, the interval formula is included. These are intervals that all scales in its category
share. By learning the intervals, you have a “backup” if you forget the specific notes in a scale.

FAQ
Double sharps (##) and double flats (bb)
When "##" and “bb” turns up among listed notes, it can be confusing for some that haven’t seen the
use of this notation before. For example, C## (spelled C double sharp) is a theoretical way for describing D.

The reason behind it is a practice that dictate against including the same letter twice in scale notations. This
becomes practical in sight reading, there double sharps and double flats are needed in some situations in which
notes otherwise couldn’t be interpreted.

How should a scale formula be understood?

The purpose with a scale formula is to explain how the scale is constructed based on intervals. This can be
helpful information since all scales in a category share the same intervals.

The formula is described by steps, which are called semi-notes or steps. The Major scale can be described by
these methods as follows:

Semi-note intervals: 2 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 1
Steps: Whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half

In both cases, it starts from the root note and continues to the next octave.

How should half and whole steps be understood?

The intervals of a scale can be described with half and whole steps. This is the same as one and two frets:

Half step: one fret

Whole step: two frets
Whole and a half step: three frets

What are scale degrees?

A degree is the place a tone has in a scale when counted forward from the root. A Major scale includes seven
tones and can be written as one to seven.

Major scale degrees: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7

Degrees are sometimes written to include the next octave tone and is usually written with “R” as the first
degree, signifying the root note.

A second way to write Major scale degrees: R - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 – 7

What is a root note?

The root note is the note after which the scale (or chord) is named. For example, in the C Major scale, the note
C is the root note. The root note is the first note in a scale.

What does scale type mean?

"Scale type" is in this case used to describe the scale based on how many notes it contains. Names such as
pentatonic and septatonic describe scales from this viewpoint. For example, septa- is a prefix for seven.
